One may occupy different stances at different times, or puzzle at the boundaries of them, I know I do. Hiding behind it all is the reality that we only have loose shared definitions about what the "skills" REALLY ARE even for that first stance
people aren't going to like this answer, but the "solution" to the flood of new games/content/apps/PRs is... 1) algorithms, 2) social trust signals, 3) human curation there is no preventing or stopping the flood, and it's not possible to review/audit it all
To manually verify EVERY game page, and not just the ones that are suspected of being AI, you'd need to have 25 people minimum, each working 56 hours a week. And that's assuming the problem doesn't get any worse!
too many products built on protocols differentiate by adding non-protocol based features, essentially walled-gardening on top of a protocol in the guise of interoperability. better products will compound the abilities of protocols rather than build away from them.
Two things are true: 1. Claims about AI capabilities are overblown 2. AI has completely revolutionized software development, and will do the same to many other fields I'm a software developer by trade. I'm going to attempt to explain what this revolution feels like "from the inside".
being really good with computers is an absolutely incredible skill because it lets you make your own life unnecessarily complicated in ways normal people could never imagine
Bootstrap sites looked bland and generic, vibecoded sites look artsy and generic.
someone on the other social network complaining that all vibecoded sites look the same bro, where were you in the 5 years from bootstrap launch, eh anywhere but on the internet, that’s my guess
I don't think it's because it's "considered déclassé". Some people have disabled their alarm years ago, because an alarm isnt useful if it's ringing all the time. The rest haven't even had an alarm to begin with, or just really like the sound of it.
It’s paralyzing! The correct, normal, healthy reaction to something like this is profound alarm. But that’s foreclosed because expressing alarm is considered déclassé. So.. how are we supposed to react? Treat lunacy as normal? And so the normalization of this nonsense undermines our whole politics.
This post is so useful and wise that I've been referencing it for over 20 years. slashdot.org/comments.pl?...
Meta took down the No Kings instagram; TikTok banned the Musk documentary account for supposedly violating its political posting policies. A reminder that platforms are owned by the wealthiest of people, control the means of media distribution, & put their thumbs on the democracy scale as they wish

I've been trying to articulate this in a way which doesn't sound judgmental, and apparently that sounds like a fortune cookie. But seriously, a question I ask a lot is "If I get used to this new system, what problems am I signing up for when I'm inevitably rug pulled?" and it's served me quite well
can those AI guys hurry up and decomp premiere pro or something useful instead of putting tony hawk in every ps1 game
I know this is just a "one or two feldspars" thing but I am truly surprised how many people are encountering physicalism for the first time. I thought everybody had that existential freakout as a teenager and then integrated it.
Again: what we’re doing here is defining “understanding” as “the thing that humans do.” If a model is accurately absorbing new information, solving unsolved problems of incredible difficulty, engaging in detailed back-and-forths, but is not “understanding,” the word “understanding” has no meaning.
So many people do not get this. Atproto identity is the closest thing to original-flavor OpenID that has been done in years. It's not OpenID (it has problems OpenID didn't and solves problems OpenID had), but it's very much in that spirit.
i guess in a way this is the most widely used one, but also one that is severely underused in other ways. definitely identity. i've long been of the opinion that there are obviously cool things that come from public data and all the public pieces of the proto, but identity is higher impact.
Digital Ocean ended their $50/month sponsorship of GNOME and FlatHub and went radio silent on CSS-Tricks right around the time they found a spare three million dollars to burn on “sponsoring” a high-profile racist’s dotfiles repo. Impossible to see this as anything but a statement of their values.
Why CSS-Tricks Has Been Quiet Lately - Geoff Graham
Because I haven't published anything to it since August 31. And no one else has either. That's not a super long time to go silent but it is for a site that

I tell you, the match between #atproto and open academic publishing is made in heaven. If we have learned anything from the for-profit-publishing, AI slop, and Twitter/X polycrisis, the future of academic publishing is decentralized eprints on #atproto, an it may well begin right here.
Alongside a bunch of bug fixes, we've got a few new features on chive.pub we're excited about. Most of them involve connecting a paper to other things that relate to it on the Atmosphere and beyond.
I despise AI companies and their goals. I am deeply passionate about climate action, and I weigh any positives that AI can bring against the critical need for us to save our planet right now. I am passionate about music and art, and I do not want it gone forever. But I am also not a dick about it!
@thisismissem.social @divy.zone and I recently went through an exploration of how the browser can help you login to websites with atproto accounts. We recently presented to the FedID CG and here is a sneak peek in case you couldn't join! This is early but we'd love your input before we go too far!
The richest man owns X. The second and fourth richest men control Google. The third richest man owns The Washington Post. The sixth richest man owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. And now the seventh richest could soon take over both Paramount and Warner Bros. See the problem here?
You don’t win an argument about definitions. You agree on definitions so that you can even have an argument
@carllerche.com Hey, I’ve been building a crate for typed representations of HTTP headers, and I saw that you own the http_headers crate on crates.io. Since it hasn’t been updated since 2014, would you be willing to transfer it to me? Here's what I intend to publish: codeberg.org/moritzruth/h...
http-headers
An ergonomic Rust crate for the encoding and decoding of HTTP header values from and to typed representations.

(I drive an entirely solar powered car, as does my wife. Nothing fancy, just at home charging during daytime with a massive solar array.) It *does* suck that those misapprehensions muddy important conversations about this tech, of course, but it’s just another situation of people confidently
Great article if you are trying to appeal to people who don't eat food.
When you have a group assignment and literally your entire grade relies on these people. @joshruben.bsky.social
great choice by rust to rename "object safety" to the much more intuitive "dyn compatibility (previously known as object safety)"
