Queer nerd. Lead Programmer for Auroch Digital, larper, just generally a bit of a weirdo. Still trying to work out how to make a good video game tragedy

We are like, 15 or 18 years into a movement in software UI design that was originally called "flat design" and is now so normalized it has no name at all. You now have to invent and use a special adjective to describe a design that is *not* flat. I still hate "flat design".

A screenshot showing "Classic", a little triangle pointing downward, a little blank space, a triangle pointing downward, an icon of a pencil, and a third triangle pointing downward, all in a blank white space next to each other

That first screenshot alone has convinced me to give it a shot. I feel like no one has ever Really gone through the full implications of Hellraiser in any of the sequels, and putting that concept front and centre suggests that this game might fully Get It.

The demo for Hellraiser: Revival came out today and I took a stab at it (pun intended). The demo is AMAZING and FREAKY. It's like if Hellraiser, Bioshock, & PT had a baby. I've had this game preordered for months and can't wait for it to drop next month. Here are screenshots from my gameplay.

This was a fascinating exercise: find out what went wrong with creativity in the games industry. The conclusion: there are too many cowards controlling too many critical levers, and until we figure out how to put people -taste, creativity, and craft- back at the top, we're going to be stuck.

The games industry is stifled by a culture of fear, concludes a workgroup hosted by Rami Ismail. https://bit.ly/4vPbIzv

Sekiro is the best From game by a lot. This is not dismissing the rest of the catalogue: however good you think the others are, Sekiro is just that much better. It really is a singular masterpiece.

"You gotta check out this viral animated web show dude, it's about a bunch of weirdos trapped in a simulated world, but get this: it's also about trau--"

I've been watching Babylon 5 (along with @merrittk.com) and it's striking how almost every episode is criticizing a) fascism, b) xenophobia/racism, c) homophobia, d) theocratic conservatism. @straczynski.bsky.social wrote that shit woker than The Pitt S2. No way an exec would greenlight it today.

Know what TV show actually wouldn’t get made today? The Twilight Zone. Half of these fuckin’ episodes are about fascism.

Liza Minnelli is an ally. That’s not up for debate, I think most LGBTQIA+ people who are aware of her and her work would agree, and there’s a bit in her autobiography that really cements what it is to be an ally where she apologises for making a homophobic joke in the 70s
