Just finished thumbnailing the next book— as artist on a graphic memoir, collaborating with a writer who’s also the subject. That’s all I can say for the next while— moving on to cutting & ruling pages for pencils!
We are seeing an increased ICE presence in NYC - making it imperative that NYers KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. I wrote a comic with @mayor.nyc.gov @nycimmigrants.bsky.social @davidhahn.bsky.social @elllewrightart.bsky.social @tayloresposito.bsky.social to do that! DOWNLOAD: www.weteachnyc.org/resources/co...

We also did some guerilla signings in bookstores as we walked by, saw the Ghostbusters HQ, and got a secret tour of young Jim Henson’s 1960s proto-muppets still hidden in the pipework panels of the 30 Rock building. All of this seems like the plot of a dream now— but that’s exactly what happened. 💗
10 years ago today, MARCH: BOOK THREE was released— an all-hands-on-deck effort as our work was increasingly a part of what was happening in the streets, classrooms & communities of America.
Hey, it’s the 10-year anniversary of one of my best days as a publicist.
We did our third Rachel Maddow Show visit, all of us stunned by Rachel’s moving 5-minute testimony to the power of the trilogy before our interview. Afterward we discovered that MARCH were the best-selling books in the US except for the new jk joint, and all sold out overnight until late August.

A birthday request: I have a new book coming out Oct. 6th called DIANA— I think it’s unique, moving, and captures my soul well. Please order one, either from your local shop, library, online, or directly from me (which I’ll send out a month early!)— thank you. 💐 www.abramsbooks.com/product/dian...
I turn 48 today. Life is increasingly weird, lonely & w/ the very idea of a future being uncertain for all of us and our plans— but we do & make things & forge connections w/ each other in spite of this slow-motion societal implosion. I’m very thankful for the people in this life who know & love me.
Jody cameo on a new poster in progress— watch for an announcement soon about a group art exhibit going up in DC just in time for @smallpressexpo.bsky.social this September (and the debut of DIANA)!
SIMPLICITY has been out for ONE YEAR today!!!! happy birthday to my little book :) we don't get paperbacks very often in the graphic novel world so it's tough to keep attention on something when it's no longer new, but i still think it's the best thing i've ever made. simplicitybook.xyz

Major Motoko! A for-fun Ghost In The Shell piece I did over the weekend, watching the excellent new animated version and rereading a bunch of Shirow comics. Trying to push my underpainting courage and work with atmospheric color.

In my essay for @qianawhitted.bsky.social Desegregating Comics, I wrote a little ab Emmett Till as a comics reader. The bed he was in when he was kidnapped was piled with comics and magazines; one of his Chicago neighbors said a bit about his comics reading. He was a kid. He should still be here.
Emmett Till was born right here in Chicago on July 25, 1941. And it is with deep humility and great pride that I signed legislation this week at Roberts Temple to declare his birthday as the Illinois Day of Reflection and Remembrance of Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley.
Major Motoko in progress! All of Masamune Shirow’s work was a major influence on my first published comics, and I’ve been loving the new animated Ghost In The Shell! It showcases so much of Shirow’s zany humor, emotion, sexiness & existential focus better than any previous adaptation I’ve seen.

OPINION: "The court did not erase the Voting Rights Act from the books. It did something quieter and more dangerous. It made the law harder to use. "That matters in Mississippi because Mississippi has never had a clean relationship with the ballot box," Duvalier Malone writes.

This is the VERY last day to check out the Athenaeum Comic Gallery at @vaultofmidnight.bsky.social! We wanted to have a time available for the locals who might have been avoiding art fair;) Come check us out from 10 to 8pm! It has been a blast the last few days (minus the smoke)!
A eulogy of sorts by @andrewaydin.bsky.social and myself, and a call to resist mythologizing & carry the torch forward from John Lewis’s passing in 2020– a great reread for today, more relevant each year. www.cnn.com/2020/09/27/o...
Opinion: With his ‘March’ trilogy, John Lewis called for a revolution. It’s time we answer | CNN
Creating a graphic-novel memoir with the explicit goal of making nonviolent revolution attainable and urgent was audacious, write “March” series co-author Andrew Aydin and illustrator Nate Powell. But...

Today marks 6 years since John Lewis passed on to the other side. Memories swirling with everywhere we traveled, people & communities moved by our work, bonds forged over those years & how John’s example impacted the lives of my kids at such a young age— still do, and always will. 💜
