In a phenomenon possibly never seen before in Britain, about five people waiting for a train at Blackheath, including myself, walked *out* of the bit of the platform with canopies in order to enjoy the very very slight bit of rain that had begun falling. And to breathe in the petrichor.
If you add 6 maximum temperature records last year, and 18 in 2024, that's just over 40 countries/territories which have broken their records in the past 2 1/2 years. Around 20% of the total number. Two countries have also set new record low temperatures over that period: Poland and Cuba.
Update: now at least 15 countries/territories which have had their highest ever recorded temperature in 2026: Austria, Bahrain, Belarus, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Guernsey, Hungary, Jersey, Kyrgyzstan, Liechtenstein, Poland, Slovakia, South Korea, Uzbekistan. Possibly Kenya too.

I was struck by a piece on Radio 4 the other day, asking whether Burnham would be more "pragmatic" - meaning "positive" - about drilling in the North Sea. It was simply taken for granted that drilling was the "pragmatic" option, while opposing it was dogmatic or ideological.
