Me: (a smart columnist, looking at claims made by an ex-Tory neo-Nazi booted out of the party for crimes, now standing as a Tory councillor whole doing a rehabilitation tour parroting the agreed media line in his new “anti-extremism” gig) This is extremely convincing stuff, and very worrying.

Interesting passage in the mea culpa on antisemitism from Tory council candidate at centre of selection row, supporting the view - fiercely denied by most on left at the time - that Corbyn was a magnet drawing antisemitic cranks into Labour. By 2015, when I was 22 turning 23, this ideology had become my whole exis-tence. I welcomed Jeremy Corbyn's election as Labour leader because I saw him as hostile to Israel and aligned with anti-Zionist politics. In my mind, all of this was part of the same war. Alongside those I associated with, I began targeting Jewish MPs and becoming loudly vocal about what we called "Jew-ish infiltration". to be honest I have a relatively high tolerance for a certain kind of arch magazine controversialism, you have no idea how much these people really mean any of it and nobody takes it seriously anyway. In the case of Rod Liddle he was manifestly a terrible piece of shit as a person as well though.

Peston's claim is, on its face, absurdly false. Mahmood is loathed by the left and a sizeable chunk of left-liberals, as well as by most of the right who are pathologically opposed to Labour tout court. So it's reasonable to ask what 'spectrum' he's referring to when he makes it.

This gets to my suspicion of Burnham’s expression of mild regret around Gaza. You’re the party who dragged Britain into Iraq. If you want to show you’re serious about ‘mistakes’ over Gaza then tell me who’s facing arrest or which Israeli arms manufacturers you’re going to kick off British soil.

I do think a lot of Starmer-friendly journalists underestimated how bad this made him look tbh. I think they expected anger from disgruntled Corbynites, but didn't factor in that even people who weren't at all sympathetic to Labour or the left were basically getting introduced to this guy as a liar

We can just say now that Sir Keir’s leadership campaign was a cruel fraud, and that Labour’s pitch to the public had little to do with their plans for a government scything benefits. Should we assess how exactly this bleak and idiotic fraud over half a decade succeeded? No, we bank it and move on.

But I think, to be fair, to Burnham and his team, this campaign is serving a different purpose. You know, I think that Keir Stormer's leadership campaign bore absolutely no resemblance to how he led the Labour Party whatsoever. You know, I think we can just say that now. You know, and they did it quite deliberately. I did an interview with Jenny Chapman, who worked for him years ago. And she was like, oh yeah, you know, I mean, we knew that we were just sort of telling the Labour Party what it wanted to hear and that we might end up doing different things in government. Or, you know, once we actually got there. You know, Keir Stormer's leadership campaign bore no resemblance to what he ended up doing. And Labour's general election campaign also, you know, was designed around that Mingva strategy, trying to make themselves the smallest possible target. They acknowledged it.
