The problem editors have getting their choices past sales+marketing is huge. I've had 5 agents so far - 3 women, 2 men, all white. We all liked different kinds of books but it's what the publishing industry likes that matters. Sometimes I can fool it, sometimes not...

In 2016, I was in the Loch Ness Inn in Lewiston drinking a pint after a lovely day of hiking and such, and saw Bear Grylls on the pub TV bite the head off a frog he’d dug out of the ground in a desert. I’ve hated him ever since with the same passion I usually reserve for mass murdering dictators.

Editing latest and had somehow forgotten that my 1930s schoolboy is reading TE Lawrence’s translation of The Odyssey and makes references to it throughout. Feels horribly bandwagony now. But I want him to be reading Lawrence for plot reasons and don’t know what else a 13 year old might want to read.

Painting created c.1967, by Mary Lorraine, in the art therapy studio at Netherne Hospital, where she was compelled to live. Several of her surviving works depict dancers & we have reason to believe she, herself, was a trained ballet dancer. This & other biographical details are awaiting confirmation

Painting in an untaught style of six white ballerinas doing a barre class with a teacher in pink tutu in the centre of the room. The practice is room is opulent with large scalloped gilt framed mirrors and a gold and crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling, although the figures are anatomically incorrect and actually impossible, there is an incredible sense of movement which is really evocative and somehow true to life and despite the perspective of the room being all wrong, it also gives a sense of place, of the long narrow room filled with music and purpose

A pale painting of a white, grey haired satyr dressed in a grey v neck sweater, white shirt and black tie with furred legs and pointy hooves, the left hand raised to shoulder height. The figure is rather stranded in the middle of an expanse of yellowing paper, it is painted in an untaught style and there is something quite camp about the satyr’s stance but there is also a slightly unsettling quality to it. His face is not very detailed but the expression on it is certainly not friendly

Ah’m daein some research fur a Scots history article the day and luikin at auld drawins fae ma faimily. ‘Fause’ is a braw aulder Scots wurd thit means ‘false’ and wis used by Rabbie Burns himsel. Aye, ah’m fae a lang line o Scots scrievers! Ye kin find oot mair in ‘The Tongue She Speaks’.
