the thing about having actual principles is that when a politician I respect does some stupid shit I can just be like, “that sucks, knock it off” instead of inventing an imaginary world where I’m forced to defend stupid shit for procedural 4d chess reasons

Yglesias in particular is “anti-woke” and has issues with trans rights. But rather than simply declare that’s what he deeply believes, he projects that onto swing voters. Other centrist Dems do the same.

Everyone coming on my feed and explaining to me that all is lost, I note what I have noted before, that there are no Negro Spirituals entitled, “Welp, I Guess It All Sucks and I Am Giving Up.”

When a politician dies we see a lot of hagiographies about them. If you mention they were a terrible person IRL, you get chastised. My feeling? If you don't want people to talk shit about you after you die, don't be shitty when you're alive.

Because fundamentally, the United States at its founding was actually a pretty damn unique idea and each successive generation of Americans has been working its ass off to continue to expand the promise of America's founding documents to a wider generation of people and I am proud to continue that.

Almost none of the ”we need to reclaim patriotism” people ever explain ~why~ we should do so. They begin with the assumption that patriotism is a good thing. What if it’s not?

One of the big blind spots of a lot of the White D politicians is that they have integrated "trust the expert" into their worldview, and they treat Cops as experts in crime, whereas they should be treated like the industry lobbyists (IE. with ton of skepticism)

we had the dotcom collapse, the great recession and covid. somehow people are very surprised that the 80s/90s church of "trust the market" is losing followers, especially among the people who went through those things in their teens and twenties.

New York City is the most perfectly "American" place in the nation, just one wave of newcomers after another, gradually building up the culture, one remarkable cultural collision after another. MAGA chuds hate NYC not because it's awful but because it disproves every lie they tell about immigration

The Bengali Knicks poet and the Sikh dholi guys combined forces for a follow-up! Now we just need the sewing machine guy and the ride a bike with stuff on his head guy to meet.

It's hard to be excited about the Artemis III mission announcements when the CEO of the company making one of the mission's rockets has spent his week inciting racial violence via his personal social media platform.

The inherent problem with a government that runs primarily as a vehicle for restricting "others" is that it eventually runs out of targets. They've used up all of the low hanging fruit, so now they have to eat their own supporters.

CLIENT: These federal charges seem serious. What kind of sentence could I get? LAWYER: Depending on the next presidential election, you're looking at somewhere between life imprisonment and becoming a millionaire.
