On Aug. 31, our teams rescued 18 people in distress in the #MediterraneanSea. Twelve were unaccompanied minors. Over 35,000 people have been recorded dead or missing in the Mediterranean. The true number is likely much higher. Julie Melichar, Country Representative, updates:

My feeling about this is that nobody electing the people running a superpower gets to complain about anybody on earth commenting on their politics. None of your congressional politics are so local that they can't get thousands across the world killed. That's just not true of most other countries.
I get that mainers are irritated that people are talking about their election. the thing is that mainers have a huge amount of power relative to people in a lot of other states.
english isn't for cowards. if you're not saying 'torpify,' that's a skill issue. there's no Académie Française telling you what to do. if you try to type 'pallific' and freak out when you see a little red underline, maybe you're not ready to roll with the big dogs.
Photos of newly arrived immigrants at Ellis Island. Augustus Sherman took the photos between 1902 and 1920 when he worked as the Chief Registry Clerk. Striking to me how the outfits all look good because they have a discernible silhouette (shape and drape).
THREAD 🧵 An Al Jazeera investigation has found that military goods from at least 51 countries were sent to Israel, even after the ICJ warned in January 2024 of a plausible risk of genocide in Gaza and ordered states to help prevent it. 🔗: aje.news/2f90pn | #Infograph

Re-upping my piece about how "institutional neutrality" is censorship in disguise. Current manufactured controversy over a commencement speech at the University of Michigan is, I think, one of the most visible and blatant illustrations of that thesis. 1/3 www.chronicle.com/article/inst...

“A democratic society needs people in Ezra Klein’s position to treat Charlie Kirk’s anti-democracy stances as disqualifying, rather than pretend they’re just another policy opinion like tax rates.“ Same point applies to Musk. Pretending X, DOGE, USAID, etc. aren’t relevant just serves Musk’s ends.

Always a good idea to read @adambonica.bsky.social on days like today.
The Court has played this role before—defending hierarchy in Dred Scott, Plessy, Korematsu—and the problem of “rotten boroughs” is not new. The Warren era was the exception, not the rule. My read on where Callais fits:
Genuine question as i don't see everything: are we getting any of the "what trump/republicans need to do to appeal to moderates/independents" pieces. I haven't seenq single one
THREAD. This single headline in the NYT contains two outrageous claims reported as fact: 1) Vance "tried" to end the war; and 2) he "opposed" it. Neither is supported, but the thing to understand is: why is lying about the *intention* of powerful people so key to propaganda?
Because I just added this to some comments on a student's paper ...
I have followed @attackerman.bsky.social's hard-hitting War on Terror journalism for almost 2 decades. But the tenderness of this piece of reporting on Gaza's hospitals is both beautiful and heart-breaking.
I’ve been a journalist for 27 years. I’ve reported major stories about mass surveillance, torture, war, the military-industrial complex, police black sites, etc. But this is the most important story I’ve ever had the horror/honor to work on. For it is a story about the current phase of a genocide.
