At this point, we should be designing/engineering with the lowest amount of tech or code possible to meet a goal. Instead, it feels like we are forcing the highest tech solutions into problems that do not require them. It's frankly embarrassing. Sometimes the right solution is the low tech one.

Many are appropriately outraged by Altman’s comments here implying that raising a human child is akin to “training” an AI model. This is part of a broader pattern where AI industry leaders use language that collapses the boundary between human and machine. 🧵/

SAM ALTMAN: “People talk about how much energy it takes to train an AI model … But it also takes a lot of energy to train a human. It takes like 20 years of life and all of the food you eat during that time before you get smart.”

I'd like to see some coordination in the open source community to respond to this. The outcome could shape significant funding and strategic moves. Off the top of my head, there's a few things that I'd like to see in a new European open source strategy. 🧵

The @ec.europa.eu will soon present “a combination of funding and policy measures” to support European open source projects in becoming commercially viable alternatives to proprietary US tech. Read my article at @euractiv.com: www.euractiv.com/news/commiss...

Great HCI still happens but it’s usually tugged away in (the few industrial, and academic) research labs. For reasons mentioned below, they have a crazy tough time to get their foot in the door with product orgs. Even if the ”novel” thing was already well explored in academia.

Ian Bogost@ibogost.com · 9mo ago

In Apple’s case, I think two things probably happened. First, HCI was killed by behavioral economics (see below), and nobody remembers how to do it. Second, they put a supply-chain guy in charge who can’t even see design, so there is no incentive anyway.

I really hate it when scientists keep saying that “we need to rebuild trust in science,” because it implies that scientists are to blame for the mistrust rather than the millions of dollars of dark money that have funded political attacks on science in order to advance a far right agenda.

you can't make a technical contribution in HCI by just connecting an LLM to something. we need to know how it works, beyond a user study with a few people. what are the ways that it fails? how fundamental are these problems, what does it reveal about the potential of this kind of use, etc.

Because of the rise of pundits and influencers and the relative extinction of professional critics and public-facing experts, we have utterly lost the distinction between matters of opinion and matters of fact. (Yeah it's not a total dichotomy)

Good write up by Nick Heer at @pxlnv.bsky.social: > We should also not lose sight of the increasing hostility of the U.S. government making these moves to reassert its dominance in [tech]. We can stop getting steamrolled if we want to, but we *really* need to want to. pxlnv.com/blog/us-incr...

Product managers tell me that you don't need UX when you can just "build measure learn" your way to product market fit. But if your sense-response mechanism is entirely built around trying new shit, and the new shit fails - what are you going to do? Continuing to tweak it only upsets users more.

This is grim stuff. ChatGPT users are pissed off at OpenAI, and it's blatantly obvious they don't really know why and neither does OpenAI. ChatGPT is a dying MMORPG.

OpenAl misses the point with new "warmer" 5 and pisses everyone off as well
Serious replies only :closed-ai:
I'm really struggling to understand how OpenAl are missing the point so badly. While the framing of the 4o v 5 debate has been reduced to people who want a cuddly bot friend v real users - the underlying issue isn't actually that.
What people who liked 4o are really saying is they want a model that thinks with them and not at them and that has contextual intelligence and strategic depth.
A one size fits all "warmth" addition is going to please no one because it doesn't actually target what the real issue is and so feels insulting. It pisses off people who want a 40 type model and it pisses off people who prefer their Al to just be a tool without having to worry about stuff like
'personality.
Really going forward they need to either just give users choice over the type of model they want to interact with or have an upgraded 4o type model but with the ability to easily tweak to suit preferences.
They need to stop it with the trying to put a band aid on a model that doesn't work for a lot of people because of how it was designed not because it doesn't tell you "great job!".

Figma (Sites) creating inaccessible, non-semantic div soup? I’m not surprised at all. That’s basically the main point of the talk I just gave at #btconf. Figma is for painting beautiful pictures of websites. Not for making websites.
