I scoured through old newspaper articles to put together a piece you can use to argue with friends who have decided to spend the next two weeks complaining about this "American" holiday (spoiler alert: not actually American) www.feijoadispatch.nz/p/halloween-...
Halloween has been celebrated in Aotearoa since the nineteenth century
The holiday has been here longer than you think

8 days left to sign up. Please show this to any of your young whānau who are feeling like politics isn't for them. But also tell them you'll ride shotgun alongside 'em.
The youth journalists are doing amazing mahi. This video is off of Instagram. It's really bloody awful how this man thinks life is only a 'pay to play' way. Sickening. Show this to your young voters. 9 days left to enrol! #NzPol #NzElection2026
Simeon Brown’s dismissal of any concern & horrendously ill advised ‘no one was affected’ comment yesterday alone should be bringing a govt down
Omg this is horrific reading "Once her son's pain medication ran out completely and there was no nurse available to top it up again ... It took the nurse 24 minutes to come to change the pain pump containing the medicine which had run out" This is a 2 year old www.rnz.co.nz/news/health/...

Worth remembering that if it costs the government $4.5b to reverse the gender pay tax, then it costs the women affected $4.5b to leave it in place.
Greens put $4.5b bill on first part of reversing government's pay equity changes
i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward
The giant screen at Wellington airport is borderline acceptable for flashing rates. don’t people know this can cause problems for epileptics.
Working on a little side project to fix something that is broken. Not sure when I will be done... ;-)
Good thing New Zealand isn't blindly pursuing a massive investment in LNG importation infrastructure... That would be a very stupid and poorly timed decision.
European gas is above €82/MWh - the highest since late 2022. Hormuz remains largely shut and gas storage is at 68% going into winter. None of this started in Europe but we pay for it. The only exit is using less gas. Heat pumps, electrified industry, insulation.
I wished that this site existed, so I spent the last week building it. Track which way an MP votes on various issues across their whole time in Parliament: hotair.nz
Hot Air
Hot Air links every New Zealand MP to what they've actually said and how they've actually voted in Parliament — built from the official Hansard record, so you can look past the press release and see the voting history for yourself.

Set up a Raspberry Pi to run Pi Hole, and then configured unbound to use DNS over TLS, because the PiHole does not support it. Feeling quite pleased with myself for a Sunday afternoon...
DUNEDIN: A long shot, perhaps, but I've walked past this wee guy every day for a week or so. I know someone will be super sad to have been separated from it. HMU if it looks familiar.
There once was a leader named Chris Whose line-hanging skills were amiss He fought with the pegs Wrestled loose threads The washing just gives him the shits!
How fast would you run screaming from the hospital if these two told you: "We're here to do your brain surgery"? Would you even be confident they could hang out your washing without fucking it up?
I refuse to believe anyone actually wants the creepy camera-toothbrush from the vacuum cleaner people.
On the way home yesterday afternoon the plane (NZ328 from CH) the wing was hit by lightening, which I saw. It was quite the sight!
There once was a plan from Chris Hipkins, With debt cuts and surplus predictions, He said "we won't cut," Then matched, near enough, Chris two, but with some new inscriptions. www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...

It’s worse than this. Having been in the room with many of them (long ago, before I knew they were psychopaths), the tycoons who are left running the industry have an active contempt for ordinary people, including their own workers. They actively want to oppress, control and punish them.
Tech execs do not have, like, a theory of mind for people who aren’t tech execs. If they did, they wouldn’t be so frequently baffled by how repulsive normal people think their whole deal is right now

I met a guy once who had worked high up in the electricity system. He said ours, with centralised long-term planning, was the envy of the rest of the world and this change would result in higher prices, less investment in generation, and rent-seeking behaviour. Totally predictable, he said.
Saw this posted on Facebook. What a fun flashback!
When I see ‘learnings‘ or ’explainer’ in a headline, it reduces my urge to read the story by 90%. Lesson: No one likes to be talked down to, as these stories often do.
I inherited my parents phone number when I moved out of home (they moved to a different phone exchange area), so I have had same landline number my entire life. I finally cancelled it today as the generation that still used it have all passed away or have all moved to cell phones.
The body language on display in the video in this story is telling. www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...
Watch: What Christopher Luxon said after second attempt to roll him

A must-read. I admit, I'm now leery of collaborating with people because undisclosed GenAI use on a manuscript can rather drastically alter the meaning / comprehensibility / flow of the text. For this reason (among others), I request tracked changes (or add them retroactively). #VersionControl
I wrote about a reason not to use generative AI in your writing that I haven't seen anyone talking about. Once I realized this, banning GenAI in our lab's writing became a no-brainer. Feel free to share, I think this is probably useful especially for trainees: www.carlsonlab.bio/thoughts/the...
