Researchers have identified superparamagnetic macrophages in the livers of rock pigeons to be crucial for magnetic sensing. The finding uncovers an unexpected role for immune cells in sensory perception and may fundamentally change our understanding of animal navigation. https://scim.ag/4nTQ3nq

How animals sense Earth’s magnetic field is one of biology’s enduring mysteries. Researchers have now identified superparamagnetic macrophages in the livers of rock pigeons (Columba livia) to be crucial for magnetic sensing. The finding uncovers an unexpected role for immune cells in sensory perception and may fundamentally change our understanding of animal navigation.

Don't ignore the "contaminants" on your grids ! We noticed this filament while solving the S. sanguinis T4P structure during my PhD. It turned out to be an incredible eDNA-protease assembly: literally a suspension bridge of proteins & DNA ! 🌉 Happy to finally share this story. #CryoEM #Microbiology

New preprint. In S. sanguinis, a C5a peptidase-like protease (ScpH) polymerizes along eDNA, turning it into a catalytic biofilm scaffold. Great work from @robinanger.bsky.social in our lab, with Pelicic lab @lcbofficiel.bsky.social www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

The new ChimeraX CubeNTube plugin allows erasing parts of maps using cube, cylinder, and custom shapes and has undo. Created by Tamino Cairoli. Available from ChimeraX menu Tools / More Tools....

Our latest T7SS study is now out in Science Advances! We solved the cryoEM structure of the T7SSb core unit (T7bCU) composed of YukB, YukC, and YukD from Bacillus subtilis, revealing how these components assemble within the secretion machinery. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

“The Website” is here! It can be intimidating getting into analysis of #CryoET data, and software is evolving all the time👩‍💻🚀. @phaips.vd.st & @florentwaltz.bsky.social put our lab’s workflows into an online guide. We hope this helps lower the bar to joining #TeamTomo. Feedback much appreciated! 🧪🧶🧬🔬

Hey #TeamTomo, Ever been in need of a tutorial about the fundamentals of cryo-electron tomography? From preprocessing raw frames to high-res subtomogram averaging? That's why @florentwaltz.bsky.social and I made this website! tomoguide.github.io Follow the thread 1 /🧵 #CryoET #CryoEM 🔬🧪

ChimeraX can be used to find pockets and cavities in protein structures using the Find Cavities tool or kvfinder command. This feature is available in daily builds from 10 March 2025 or later.
