Post grad student, (former but no doubt I'll be back) teacher, parent

Oh this is absolutely terrible. Neurodivergent kids are going to be even further excluded… If this policy was in place before the 8yo was diagnosed (which the system wouldn’t do until he was 6), he would’ve been stood down multiple times in his first couple of years at school. 1/n

Act to give schools ‘reasonable force’ powers to remove students, $3000 fines for parents

Fines for parents would start at $300 but could go as high as $3000.

Don't get long covid. Every day is some new bullshit and then you have to listen to an entire social media site go on about how nothing is worse than staying home for two months.

Neuroaesthetics is a growing area of research showing that seeking out & engaging with images & things we find beautiful each day can significantly improve mental health-my photo of dried flowers is some neuroaesthetics for your brain. Also spot the dried viola/tiny pansy...

You can become disabled or homeless in an instant. It just takes one accident or illness to change your life forever. It’s not a moral failing. You can’t just “try harder”. People need support, compassion and to have their basic needs met. That’s how you ensure survival.

We are all constantly doing the calculus of being, but the equations aren't the same for everyone. I think it's extremely easy to lose sight of that because we are all so accustomed to our own internal experience, our own metrics of comfort and well-being, motivation and inertia.

They lied about and downplayed the long term effects of COVID like they did with climate change. Is that beginning to dawn on more people yet? I recommend protecting your health, especially given what this new world looks like. Sorry for the gloom/never sorry for sharing hard truths.

the current NZ govt is so anti-science that they've changed eligibility for the Prime Minister's Science Prizes to rule out awards to people doing basic science eg from 2026 the MacDiarmid is for work with "potential to generate econ, health, social, or env benefits for New Zealand" #nzpol

I also hand them out to help people protect themselves from wild fire smoke. Gave out a bunch today. Air quality in Calgary right now is 10+, the worst level in the scale. Going to the FolkFest? Wear a mask. — We need clean air and a stable climate, not more pipelines. #canpoli #abpoli #ableg

I hand out respirator/breatheteq masks to my patients to help them reduce their risk of getting COVID and Long COVID. Here's the letter I've put together about this for parents about children masking. @longcovidresource.bsky.social @longcovidadvoc.com @longcovidkids.bsky.social #longcovid

Letter with different typeface colours entitled, "Preventing Long COVID in Children". Text as follows:

As described by the Public Health Agency of Canada1,
Long COVID (also known as post-COVID-19 condition) affects children as well as adults.
- It’s long-lasting symptoms after a known or unknown COVID infection.
- The most common Long COVID symptoms in children are:
Fatigue
Headache
Abdominal pain
Sleep problems
Shortness of breath
Cognitive problems (difficulty thinking or concentrating)
Muscle aches and joint pains

I care for children with Long COVID. It can interfere with their social, physical and educational development. You do not want your child to develop Long COVID.

While there are some promising therapies, there is no clear cure for Long COVID.

The best way to prevent Long COVID is to prevent COVID infections.
Since COVID is airborne, the best way to prevent COVID infections is to wear respirator-type masks (like N95s) all the time indoors. This is why I’m giving you this mask for your child to wear. I personally purchased these to hand out to my patients. This is how important it is to me, as your child’s doctor, for your child to mask: to protect their health.

I know there will be times at school and other places where your child will want to remove their mask. Wearing a mask as much as possible in public indoor spaces will greatly reduce your child’s risk of getting COVID, which will reduce their risk of developing Long COVID. If they wear it 90% of the time, that’s still a huge win and way better than wearing it only 20% of the time, or not at all.

> Key tip: shape the curve of the nose piece first, then put the mask on.

A leather satchel with a kōwhaiwhai design on the front representing Hine-Uri. It's a dark brown, and the pattern is in lighter and darker tones of brown and black.

The way ‘pacing’ is being framed is dangerously close to ‘self care’ Sometimes symptoms can be managed, sometimes they can’t. No amount of pacing will help if digesting food requires more energy than your body can produce. This is an illness, not a mindset. #MECFS #LongCovid

Late July garden floral palette. Our brains evolved to look at plants carefully every day while foraging & become more relaxed while doing so due to the presence of good snacks & medicine. This photo is for those ancient pathways that still exist among your neurons🌿🧠:
