I agree that the tech backlash has a lot to do with the fact that Silicon Valley has pretty much given up on giving us cool things - and has trained us to assume that tech products that *seem* cool are probably secretly evil. I wrote about this last year:
I Just Want a Cute Robot Lamp That Isn't Evil
Apple's engineers have figured out how to design a robot lamp so adorable that everyone I've shown the video to says they'd die for it. By studying how to translate human expression into the movement...

The government waived 66 laws to build a half-billion-dollar border wall. Activists in Lochiel, Arizona have spent 2+ weeks trying to stop it by keeping someone 50 feet up a centuries-old cottonwood around the clock.
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the lord He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored
BREAKING: the Democratic National Committee just unanimously approved a resolution calling for the abolition of ICE! After terrorizing our friends, families, and neighbors, ICE has no place in our nation. I'm grateful @democrats.org agreed. Now we're onto the hard work to make that happen!
this is the absolute best part of visiting pompeii the city is filled with graffiti like “Aufidius was here” and “I screwed the barmaid” and “Epaphra, you are bald!” people have just been people, forever
i love when they recover some 3000 year old clay tablet and its something totally relatable like “i hope this tablet finds you well but the group project is a disaster…”
There are people struggling to make ends meet who will vote for Abbot again this November. The GOP has controlled every aspect of life in this state for 2+ decades and I think it’s time for voters to admit that the problems we face are because we have been the most right wing state in the union
These gloves don't cause neuromuscular incapacitation the way that a taser does. In fact, they only work when applied directly to bare skin. These aren't made for apprehending anyone. These have one and only one use: causing extreme pain to already-restrained captives. In plain language: torture.
Zero surprise that these are explicitly designed to cause pain without leaving a mark, not to incapacitate. Yes, we're spending $20M to buy ICE agents torture devices.
Interesting thing about our current era of total mask-off bigotry among politicians and the elite class: by doing so, they’ve almost totally obliterated the little fig-leaf of plausible public deniabiity about how they can’t *really* be *that* bigoted that they used to rely upon.
I will keep repeating this until the day I die because I have no other way of processing the anger and trauma. Obama opened Dilley. Obama ramped up family detention at Berks and, also, Karnes. Children under his watch were suicidal. At Berks, the mothers called a certain meal "monkey meat." ...
Trauma clinician here. Even if those kids are released tomorrow they will never be fully released from the trauma of their incarceration. They may leave Dilley, but they will never completely leave Dilley behind them. The impact is forever. That is what our government chooses to do to children.
Recall that industry says that 250,000 is the operational minimum for the reserve (50,000 barrels to go)
RBADVISERS: “.. Yet another inflation impulse. The US basically has NO STRATEGIC PETROLEUM RESERVE (SPR) anymore.”
The argument that Democrats—if they get power again—should refrain from Supreme Court reform in the name of preserving norms has a deep flaw: Trump, the Republican Party, and the Roberts Court already destroyed those norms. Denial won’t bring them back. As this essay says, moral courage is needed.
When Bob Bauer and David French balked at the idea of expanding the Supreme Court, @deadcarl.bsky.social recognized it for what it was: not analytical rigor but a lack of what Clausewitz called the “moral courage” required to meet our moment. www.liberalcurrents.com/clausewitz-a...
Can we get a crowd going to demand the release of Mitch McConnell rotting cadaver?
If you're wondering why Trump's approval isn't lower, remember that Nixon had about 25% approval even through his resignation and Trump probably has an even larger core of cultists. This is still staggeringly low. Republicans on the ballot this fall should be in full panic.

Ever wonder what that feeling must have been as an ex enslaved person to wake up the morning after emancipation hit and not have to go to work?
Prairieland: the story “We’re just trying to survive in this fucked up self-immolation of the United States.” “The real crime here is friendship, not conspiracy.” “Just keep your face steady and do not let these motherfuckers see you cry.”

Its revolting to see a teacher union president taking the side of the defund education propaganda
there’s a lot to be said about organized labor and its support of generative ai and hyperscale data centers
“Teaching educators about AI is a ‘moral imperative’, said Randi Weingarten, the AFT president.” “And without outside funding, it was a choice between taking big tech’s money or doing nothing, she said.”

“AI is the asbestos we're shoveling into the walls of our technological society…. Our descendants will spend *generations* digging it out again, and the longer the bubble goes on without popping, the longer it will take to repair the damage.”
As ever, the most important fact about a given technology isn't "what it does," but "who it does it *for*" and "who it does it *to*." 77/

This is a masked ICE agent in upper Manhattan today. He walked up to a woman simply recording and pepper-sprayed her in the face. Watch the video. 👇
