I saw the Flaco documentary, "Wild Inside." It's very good. A few takeaways: 1. Ban rodenticide. We don't need it to effectively control rat populations and it poisons entire food webs. 2. Convert all fireworks displays to drone shows. 3. Ban carriage horses in New York City.

I’m on a small-ship Alaska cruise with my son; our boat rescued a stranded vessel last night and apparently we did that after the Coast Guard radioed Mark Zuckerberg’s yacht - which was closer - and they repeatedly refused to respond. (There was near unanimous booing when the captain announced this)

Earplugs company trying to get me to buy with "the ringing in your ears after a night out isn't normal." Joke's on you babes, I've had tinnitus since middle school. (I wear earplugs a lot and recommend them to everyone!)

Dudes are fine. And I for one thank Matt Dinniman as my Time of Iron books are being sold as readalikes and I am getting very nice emails from dudes! ‘I don’t see why everyone hates your main girl I think she has great tits and a great sense of humour’ one said memorably. Thank you sir I agree.

That said the #1 book on the NYT print/ebook list (and the USA Today list) this is week is from a dude, and the great publishing phenomenon of the last year is Matt Dinniman, who occupies multiple slots on multiple NYT lists, and let's not forget Andy Weir setting up camp either. Dudes are fine.

The WNBPA (the players’ union, not the league itself) released a statement. I’m glad that it mentions transgender people by name. I wish the line about strengthening Title IX had been more clear about meaning to protect trans students & not to exclude them.

A MESSAGE FROM
WNBPA PLAYER LEADERSHIP
To everyone who loves this game: The WNBPA represents 200+ individual people with different lived experiences, cultures, lifestyles, and opinions.
We embrace justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Those are the values that unite this Union and allow it to protect women's sports while creating transformational change.
Hate, abuse, and demonization of any person or group of people, including transgender people, only fuel fear, division, and harm. We will continue to have hard conversations. But we will not be used as political pawns.
Support the Players. Support the Fans. At games, notify security if you witness hateful, violent, or abusive behavior. Online, report abusive posts and drown out the bots and bad actors. At home, tell your elected officials to strengthen Title IX.

Pleased to finally announce... Abdication, the last Southern Reach novel! "There will come the days of the watcher, the drowned woman and the shadow of a man who keeps falling apart with each step, but first comes the moment the birds appear at night from the gaps between the stars, far from home."

Publishers Marketplace Deal Report, August 6, 2026:

Jeff Vandermeer's ABDICATION, the last novel in the Southern Reach series, in which an ornithologist exiled to a remote coast stumbles on a terrifying secret,  a self-proclaimed king pursues a mystery hidden in a strange weather station, and a man who can become a cormorant is tasked with a deadly mission through a future landscape transformed by Area X, for publication in October 2027, in a significant deal, to Jenna Johnson at Farrar, Straus, by Joseph Veltre at the Gersh Agency and Alex Kohner at Yorn Levine (world).

For reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture I am apparently making an entire #HeatedRivalry vid cycle to the Tragically Hip. Just posted the second, an Ilya vid in which he is leaving Russia like a coyote leaves a leg-hold trap: archiveofourown.org/works/89827221

Bay Area friends: would you consider opening your home to these two cuddly cats? A friend found them behind a gas station. Their sibling, a black cat, got adopted, but it appears no one likes orange cats. They are being kept in a bathroom for the time being and need a home.

A friend of mine found these three kittens behind a Bay Area gas station. They are tame, vaccinated, and incredibly affectionate. Unfortunately, she's unable to keep them and I'm trying to find them a home. They are at risk of going to a shelter. Bay Area people, are you open to adopting?

Three kittens in a cage. Two are orange and one is black.

More HR fic...yes, Shane's talent would have been obvious from about age five. He obviously does put in the work, but at his level he was absolutely a child athletic prodigy.
