IDC about this debate, but to be clear, yes, the vast majority of the public have never been to an academic conference. That doesn’t mean we need to make conferences kinder (idk, maybe we do, separate q), but at a very basic level we absolutely do need to adjust to speak to general audiences.

It's worth highlighting that with staff downsizes, either you 1) have fewer people doing the same aggregate amount of work, leading to overtime increases like this, or 2) you just accomplish less aggregate work, leading to service impacts like I find in SSA under Reagan. /1

This sounds nice, but the more I think about it the more I think it ignores trade offs and public trust at a fundamental level. It implies that passing policy that we think is not beneficial (but not harmful) 1) doesn’t affect the appetite for/budget of political capital for other, better policies.

My dad abhors any negative comments about immigrants. Asked him recently why he’s so strong on it: ‘Because we’re always happy to take the rich and clever ones. Which means it’s not about disliking immigrants. It’s about disliking the poor and vulnerable. And that’s a bad human instinct.’

Is there any estimate — national, state-level, I'll take any estimate — of the share of Medicaid beneficiaries whose enrollment is prompted by/at a medical visit? (Versus filling out application paperwork outside of/without the help of a health care provider.)
All I want for Christmas is policies with a high MVPF. Funded by taxes. Instead of whatever Michael Dell feels like doing with his money.

I'm on the #EconJobMarket! I study how policies and childhood environments shape outcomes of low-income & vulnerable kids. In my JMP, I study the effects of allowing youth who would have aged out of foster care at 18 to stay until 21—offering support their peers not in foster care get from parents.
