Q4: #HorrorWritersChat A “ghost” that brings and feeds on loneliness is both infinitely dark and blindingly bright. Sooty and greasy, you know you don’t want it touching you, yet it invites—demands—attention and affection. It is love that makes you fear. A fear that makes you wallow.

It sits on your neck, cold as a nightmare with fingers that dig into your throat, your mind. It w h i s p e r s, hissing words you can't keep out no matter how you clamp your hands to your ears. A thin tongue oozes across your cheek, your eyes. T h e y d e s e r v e i t ... D o i t. D o i t.

You would think it’s an ordinary painting of a man covered in thick gray smoke. But his eyes—you can’t help but stare into those hollow white eyes. Maybe you’re tired, but you could have sworn you felt the fog slipping into your heart, eating your emotions away…. #HorrorWritersChat

#horrorwriterschat it's a thing that slithers. it nestles in the throat, latched onto the base of the tongue. its voice reverberates through the host's vocal folds, through manipulated bone and muscle. It stretches through the host. It anchors, unseen. It sits, and it watches, and it waits.

It didn't exist in three dimensions, or it wouldn't shift like that - almost like I was seeing slices of it dipping into my world from somewhere else. I could see viscera where the flesh disappeared, but the flesh reappeared and covered it. A jaw vanished, leaving bare teeth. #horrorwriterschat

#HorrorWritersChat My monster is Lionel Metcalfe. He’s your next door neighbour. He always says ‘hello’. Keeps himself to himself though. And also, there’s that’s odd drilling noise you keep hearing through the connecting wall in the middle of the night…

Picture this; the Drowned Coot. An old man murdered in a swamp. Carrying both the stench of decay and the swamp as he wobbles forever onwards to those who wronged him. When you hear wet hobbles, and the horrible, wet rasp. He is near. And then then rusted rifle clicks. #HorrorWritersChat

#HorrorWritersChat I don't like to reveal much too early. The feeling of isolation mixed with an overactive imagination is what I love. The slurping noises, something banging against a wall, a tentacle winding around a door knob, the build up of what the creature is and how the characters react.

You knit your own, primal incantations into the fur with a gilded needle. Words of binding. Control. Obedience. They glitter under the growing moon. Great monster design is intertwined with a theme. How do you express your favourite themes with your monsters? #HorrorWritersChat

#HorrorWritersChat I don't usually show monsters. Learned that lesson from the movies JAWS & CURSE OF THE DEMON. It's more effective to leave what the monster looks like to the imagination. The mech. shark in JAWS kept sinking to the bottom of the ocean so Speilberg inferred it. Much more effective.

The frame of your creation rests betwixt crumpled gravestones. You cradle the silver heart in your hands. Stained with your own blood. How do your monsters scare your characters? Is it by their detailed design, or their vague, terrifying aura? How much do you really show? #HorrorWritersChat

Often most of the horror comes from encountering something that shouldn't exist. Something predatory. I think of my characters as being hunted. The hunter may be grotesque, or just physically overwhelming I try to show enough for my readers to understand what the monster is #HorrorWritersChat

Running late, but I never miss these if I can help it! Bradley Ramsey here: writer of cosmic, sci-fi, and comedy-horror. Favorite monster design has to be anything Lovecraftian (and bonus points for multiple eyes). A lot of my creature designs have way too many eyes. 👀 #HorrorWritersChat

I tend to go for the Tiny But Terrifying Glimpse approach. In prose, it's hard not to lose a lot of the terror once you have unveiled the full picture. The Lantern Men, the monsters in my story of that name, are invisible. The terror manifests in what they do to their victims. #HorrorWritersChat

#horrorwriterschat One of the creatures in my current piece is a reflection of all the darkness in one of the main characters. Looking into an onyx-glazed mirror, and trying to find familiar shapes in your own reflection. They're called the Wretched. They look decrepit. Decaying.
