Nolan’s Odyssey is not Homer’s Odyssey, and that’s cool, IMO. I think it’s interesting to dig into what the storyteller is trying to say by telling *this* story in *this* way at *this* time.

You actually don't have to do the "well, you know, I disagree with MAHA but they're right that there are real problems with The System" thing. That's a concession you absolutely do not have to make.

There are a THOUSAND different things that can affect the popularity of movie genres and the waning and resurfacing of cultural trends - but NONE of them are more powerful or more overlooked than human aging and the chronological passage of TIME. Those are undefeated.

it’s never a great sign for your society when all the competent people who believe in doing a good job for the sake of it conclude that they’re actively being punished for these qualities, while malignantly stupid criminals are making bank

Yes, stupid immoral assholes have done far too well for basically forever, but right now, it feels like being a stupid immoral asshole has become the ONLY way to do well. That is a problem.

My hot take is that Godwin's Law has been an unmitigated disaster for online discourse because actually there are Nazis and it's worth talking about them. Thinking of them as the most evil thing ever that will never be reached again is harmful folly.

Agreed. Also, I'm old enough to remember The Blair Witch Project being a legit cultural phenomenon back when there was still some semblance of monoculture, and big ol' blockbusters kept ticking along just fine. I dug Obsession and Backrooms (and Iron Lung!) quite a bit, but... c'mon.

Propaganda I'm not falling for is that Obsession and Backrooms "re-invigorated the horror genre after years of slop!" as if Sinners and Weapons didn't come out last year. Michael B. Jordan and Amy Madigan literally won Oscars for their performances in those movies. SYBAU
