I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

ALL MY DEAD CATS AND OTHER LOSSES, my book about grief; who is allowed to mourn and how; and why people want to pathologize the experiences that make us human, is available now in print, ebook, and audiobook formats, wherever fine books are sold (or loaned, shoutout to libraries).

All My Dead Cats and Other Losses: Practicing Good Grief in a Culture That Fears Mourning

"Both a grief book that doesn't read like a clinician's notes and a memoir wrapped around a bigger subject, All My Dead Cats takes grief from the taboo to the universal." — BooklistHave you suffered a...

Probably more helpful to think of them not so much as “Canadian wildfires” but rather “climate change wildfires currently consuming Canada”

Holy shit. Buried in that DHS document about its desired “deportation airline” is a request for contractors to procure and maintain 1,000-bed “detention facilities” in foreign countries. Huge scoop from @charliearchy.bsky.social. www.theredoubt.net/ice-detentio...

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is looking for private contractors that could help set up "international staging areas" abroad.

There's still time to submit a comment. I just did so, sharing a family member's health situation that very much needs for research to continue based on science, not the whim of political appointees. Please take 5 minutes to submit your own.

Here’s a great resource to help write a comment this weekend before the deadline, by @colesci.bsky.social and @cdelawalla.bsky.social: www.standupforscience.foundation/policy-and-a...

Mainstream Respectable opinion is that people joking about a bad person's death represents a culture of cruelty, but really it represents a culture of impunity. It's a coping mechanism for watching someone do evil their whole life and never seeing consequences

I’ve been getting questions about how to organize locally or regionally. I want to clarify to folks that there is no boss here. There is no admission process. There’s nobody that needs to approve your participation. Have land? You can offer it for community gardening. 🧵

People often wait for a leader or some kind of structured organizing to join so they can follow instructions. That rarely works. It's better to just build this kind of culture and community where people "understand the assignment". And then you get all those folks together to talk from time to time and rally behind common issues. If you look at my pinned post, it's a kind of a digital example of how this works. It's not the kind of organizing I can really teach anyone via an instruction manual. It's learned just by doing it and being an example to others. Right? Leadership is not being the boss. It's when you behave or act in a certain way that inspires others to do the same. That's leadership. We can all be leaders. We are all leaders here. In our own way

Went for a bike ride passed a Parks & Rec(?) summer camp(?) bike ride on the River Rd path. Kid sticks out his hand, “High Five!!” I reach over and we connect, the cheer that went up among the 20 kids will keep me going all week.

Did a sketch but couldn't be bothered to flesh it out. Happy world firefly day/weekend, regardless. May your butts be the light in these dark times.

This will be a thread of tips for people suffering through their first god-awful heat wave with no or subpar AC. I'm a perpetually broke Southern Californian so my ideas run cheap.

It's all "ooooh we need a meritocracy" until the wrong people have merit and then it's like "oooh we need to protect us." Trans kids deserve a chance play in sports because EVERYONE deserves a chance to play in sports and nobody should lose that chance because they're disfavored by bigots.

I don’t want to hear another word from establishment Dems about cooperating with Republicans. Don’t want to see another stupid bipartisan photo about “seersucker suit day” on the Hill. Nine people who protested ICE at a detention camp were just sentenced to 50-100 years in prison. WAKE TF UP.

I don’t know if he intended it to be this way, but Brian Goldstone wrote a book that every education policy person and every educator needs to read. This is why: 1) This is a book about children. They are there in nearly every scene, and every setback in their families’ quest for a home is…
