Just a garden variety. ⬅️ (that is funny as hell to me). Sometimes irreverent, never cruel. Following experts, thinkers and funny sumbitches because their humanity helps fix my heart. Sharing mostly bird stuff because birds are amazing.
I'm thrilled to share my first foray into nature writing. I describe my travels through Aotearoa New Zealand to see the country's rarest birds—and use this as a vehicle to tell the stories of the islands' evolutionary history and the bold conservation efforts that saved these creatures. Gift link

Please enjoy this monarch butterfly. I grew that marigold myself, so I’m quite pleased.
Usually, kestrels won't let me take their photo, but this little lady wanted to make sure I got her good side. 🪶
Once down to a single pair. Conservationists rescued them from oblivion. The flock is now 350 strong. New Zealand’s karure, or black robin, has been crowned the country’s 2026 Bird of the Year. cnn.it/4rqzZeL
Given all the *flails hands* you all deserve one of the most adorable pictures I took of Baby Bird Season 2026. A snowy ploverlet peeking through a little sand shrub. Perhaps a once in a lifetime shot. 🪶 🐣
325 #kakapo! The chicks from this year's record breeding season are now juveniles and so have been added to the population. In 1995 there were just 51 kākāpō left. Recovery of critically endangered species _is_ possible with sustained effort. #kakapo2026 #conservation #parrots

Found a teddy bear out front of my house. Tiniest teddy bear I've ever seen. Couldn't believe it.
I just found out there's a creature called a puffleg hummingbird, that wears a tiny pair of fluffy white trousers.
Today I learned that baby cranes are called "colts" because their legs are so long and they can run around like idiots shortly after hatching. This is delightful, I enjoy knowing this.
Hi everyone! I hope you're having a great Wednesday. Just wanted to make sure everyone knows what a baby heron looks like. Ok bye see you later www.instagram.com/p/DateeyJCE3Y/

I still can’t believe this Great Blue Heron let me witness this tonight. Those wild feathers are breeding plumes, and seeing them lit softly in the evening shadows felt almost unreal.
Another photo of the stunning European Bee-eater from a few weeks ago. Here you can see it is totally focused on its next meal. They are like giant colourful flycatchers in their behaviour. #birds #birdsseenin2026 #birdoftheday #birdphotography #birding
Razorbills have the slickest design in the animal kingdom. They look like they were made by Yves Saint Laurent
I saw this barred owl yesterday as well, just feet from where the egret was hanging about. I'm not entirely sure what it was doing, I took this photo from directly below so it was essentially laying down on the branch and looking at me. #Scrollback #BirdOfTheDay #Photography #Birds #Owls
