I know nobody likes a Bsky rant, but here goes. There's a recent stream of manuscripts I'm reviewing that seem to randomly refer to figure panels. It makes it so difficult to follow a paper. One constantly thinks, did I miss something? What do all the intervening panels show? Please do not do this!

Liver-X-receptor agonism enhances T cell priming and activation to promote anti-tumor immunity

As I predicted, the cutting of @ukri.org funding is to provide "more emphasis on commercialisation". This is an absolutely terrible decision. Most startups fail, or are bought by larger competitors. In both cases, their research is frequently lost from the public domain www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
UK’s £8bn research fund faces “hard decisions” as it pauses new grants
UKRI boss Ian Chapman said it had been told by the government to
bbc.co.uk
Yes @ukri.org, please provide clarity and reasons for this chain of events. It would be a huge disadvantage to UK innovation if we went down a path of science funding that is similar to Trump's USA.
@ukri.org Could you please make a statement about whether this will impact on grants already in review from autumn 2025? It's hard to accept grant opportunities closing, but even harder to accept the rug being pulled after review. Rumours of a 1-5% acceptance rate would be incredibly hard to take
This is an absolute outrage that should be discussed as widely as possible. I expect that this failing government will try and use the MRC to divert funding from academic research into commercial enterprises, killing UK research in the process.
Both MRC and BBSRC responsive modes now withdrawn until further notice. Existing applications unlikely to succeed (late 2025 round expecting 1-5% success rate). Listen, I get that UKRI wants to pivot. But killing both at once is devastating. Let's hope at least one opens by summer... #AcademicSky
