This new electoral vídeo from Pedro Sánchez is quite something. Standing in front of Guernica defending the anti-war stance of his government, limiting military expenditure, denouncing the atrocity of Gaza. English subtitles.
I always think about what Mac from Always Sunny said about his transformation
[smugly] I am much older than that.
Ah yes JD. The French people, famously known for never destroying buildings during political protests.
absolutely terrible, stupid framing. DOGE could have *only* been a "missed opportunity" if it had been conceived, planned, & implemented exactly opposite of how it was, by people who did not think like they did, for goals antithetical to their actual goals.
DOGE was a huge missed opportunity
The American Dream is amazing: within just a few years you can go from being the child of Cuban immigrants to the great-grandson of Spanish settlers.
Funny how Marco Rubio tries to differentiate himself from all the other children of recent immigrants who are now getting removed from the country by the master he now serves. Rubio, you see, is a descendent of *the West*

this is weird because I have never heard of the song or artist until just this second
“Choosin’ Texas” by Ella Langley officially surpasses “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey as the longest-running #1 hit in history (23 weeks).
as a first principle, 'how other men behave toward me' has zero evidentiary value in evaluating how they behave toward woman
Some of you don’t understand how “big” / “important” / “influential” you are . Even in your small circles. I need you to, because you do not comprehend how much terrible people will keep it together around you .

Oh this is so wonderful
This Finnish guy has been teaching himself Sumerian, and sent a cuneiform tablet to the British Museum to check his progress. They just emailed him that they've sent him something in the post. I'm now thrilled and excited for a total stranger! Clay tablet mail! www.reddit.com/r/Cuneiform/...
Yeah, man, it's really irresponsible of countries to get involved in wars that screw up oil-producing regions, I hope they had a good reason for that, we'd never do anything like that, no sir.
Bessent blames Ukraine for high gas prices: "Ukraine has decided that they want to blow up Russian energy assets and refined products, so that is creating upward price pressure on a global basis"
AI is alarming for many reasons: it's a dangerous financial bubble, an environmental catastrophe, and a tool for eroding wages and labor power. But in addition to all that, AI is an epistemic disaster. 1/

This is some absolute nonsense impacting one of my favourite sandwich places in Belfast
How can an individual be “polarized”? An individual can be “radicalized”. Anyway, most “polarization” literature is about right-wing radicalization. Stop using the term “polarization” for radicalization on one pole!
You could say that Matty conveniently leaving out that Macron has been firmly in support of cutting back the French welfare state, reducing labor rights, and supporting the exact kind of austerity that Matty reflexively loves is stupidity. I think it's a sign that he knows his time is up. 1/x 🧵
LePen wouldn’t be leading all the polls if France had universal health care and strong labor unions.
The Imperial Powers spent 200 years after the enlightenment and French Revolution coming up with contorted moral justifications for their tyrannies and exploitations and these guys are too busy masturbating to death and destruction to bother making any pretentions

Basically very, very few people are openly objectionable in person - but you are the totality of what you do and say, not just when you want people to like you and when you're around people you've decided worthy of respect.
One of the things us an industry need to stop doing is perpetuating the 'they say this on social media, but they're a sweetheart in real life' about awful people I've had other journos say this to me about some of the most pernicious grifters over the years, some of who crossed many lines this week
AI RANT Following the cancellation of three major debut book deals over AI suspicions, I decided to put my own (needless to say, 100% human-written) prose to the test. My detector of choice was Originality AI, and the results proved to be jarring, to say the least. 🧵1/5

"𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘙𝘪𝘴𝘬𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘥 𝘚𝘦𝘢: 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘪 𝘈𝘵𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤"

One of my favorite rhetorical and analytical moves is joining things (showing that different, seemingly unrelated ideas are part of the same phenomenon) and taking them apart (resolving paradoxes by demonstrating that what appears like a contradictory thing is different things, lumped together). 1/
I think it's because the jump from High school history to academic history is so big: and because most popular historians, the ones you see in the bookshops, don't show their working
I think a lot of this is downstream of the fact most people don't actually understand what a historian does to produce a work of history, *especially* in terms of interpretation
