Sometime lawyer, dipping my toe in from the other place!

We should have known, of course. We might have looked like the IRA on a mission, but left to their own devices the police at the checkpoints had just reverted to their default position. They were only stopping black people.

The far right in France has accused Thélyson Orélien, a Haitian writer whose novel has been widely acclaimed, to have used AI to write it The accusation is, unsurprisingly, based on shaky grounds as described in this excellent article but the damage is done www.mediapart.fr/journal/cult...

We know too well why the far right is doing this and the consequences are very clear and yet so many continue to tiptoe around the far right media as if they are a legitimate part of a democratic debate rather than the enemy of democracy pure and simple

Plenty of other reasons to hate AI: It's making people stupider. The Trump/Musk slop art. It's destroying journalism. It's environmentally damaging. The attempts to force it on us are part of a larger anti-democracy project. But deadly robot armies ain't it.

Anyway, I know that the "we're all going to die by a robot army" hype is really fun for folks, and so that's going to have way more power than the "nah, dawg, that's dumb" skepticism. That's my cross to bear. But please do consider the possibility it's just very silly hype.

Fair play to the wife of a Caribbean man and mother of mixed race children being informed by the BBC reporter that she’s in the minority in her community regarding immigration and responding with, “Yes, I’m surrounded by bigots.”

If you’ve been ingesting a load of AI-related bullshit online and despairing at your fellow human beings I can highly recommend living with a four year old who, when picked up from school, shouts DADDY WE MADE A MONSTER OUT OF TWIGS

Is it too much to ask from the Prime Minister of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to grab the largest microphone and television camera in his immediate vicinity and shout "STOP TRYING TO LYNCH ASYLUM SEEKERS YOU RACIST CUNTS!" from the top of his lungs? Yes. Apparently.

My first morning in the Omaze house. I didn’t sleep. I could hear crying from behind the door I’m not allowed to open. The only thing to eat is frozen prawns. I went for a wander round the 4 acre garden and found a box of VHS tapes marked ‘For the next one’. I’m sure it’s fine. I’m sure it’s all fine

Today, the anniversary (one way or another) of three deaths: one that wasn’t supposed to happen, because Henry II, Count of Champagne and King of Jerusalem, was only 31, but on this day in 1197 had a slight mishap with a window...

Excerpt from Steven Runciman’s A History of the Crusades, Volume Three: On 10 September 1197 his troops assembled in the palace courtyard; and Henry reviewed them from the window of an upper gallery. At that moment envoys from the Pisan colony entered the room. Henry turned to greet them, then, forgetting where he was, stepped backward through the open window. His little dwarf, Scarlet, was standing by him and grabbed at his clothes. But Henry was a heavy man and Scarlet very light. They crashed together on to the pavement below and were killed."
