Every now and then someone takes a run at me along the lines of "I don't understand why you, a scifi writer, don't appreciate 'AI'," and I'm all, motherfucker, it's *because* I'm a science fiction writer I have the positions I have, how many times do we have to fucking yell "torment nexus," my dude

Hey remember when a Labour leader had the instinct to give someone being a shit a bit of a fucken serve on live television? Yeah, I remember how it was an important marker and enthused people who wanted less boorish male bullshit.

Jacinda Ardern about two days into the job giving Mark Richardson a fuckin serve on Breakfast TV

Lessons for NZ - apparently datacentres in Ireland draw =23% of the country's power and household power bills have gone up 600 Euros in the last year as a result. Use urged from 5% of national electricity demand in 2015 to 23% in 2025. Forecast to exceed 30%

"How much of your own money have you invested the businesses you ran?" "How exactly did you personally reshape and retool the global conglomerate Unilever and state-subsidised Air NZ, and how enduring have those measures proved?" Why does no one call him on his bullshit? I hate his face

if you're going to support Chinese protectionism at least be honest and tell me it's because you don't want to compete, don't want tougher domestic regulation, or are getting fat stacks of cash from U.S. carmakers don't come at me with claims you are trying to protect privacy

Another slip at Mauao this week - thankfully not tragic like the one in February - in part because the walking tracks hadn’t yet been reopened while TCC continued engineering checks. And here’s local MP Sam Uffindell demanding the walkway reopen last week because people want to walk it now 🙄

Millionaire landlord Prime Minister that took a 50k payrise during a cost of living crisis and tried to take a wage subsidy of 52k to live in his own house just said he supports actual workers having their pay cut

I make this plot each year for our "intro to rocket science" course. It's remarkable that as many rockets go to orbit from New Zealand as from Russia – but on a per head basis we stand alone. This is an amazing place for a small country to find itself, and we should be making the most of it...

Two graphs, both showing the number of launches to orbit per country per year. New Zealand is 3rd= with Russia in terms of the absolute count, but way ahead in a per capita plot.

Dear Aotearoa New Zealand, We have a Prime Minister who doesn't know how to be one; a Finance Minister who is laughably unqualified; a party whose values are "me me me"; an old fart minister who just won't quit.... the list really does go on. Vote them out. Please. #nzpol

I understand there is cute mammal pest discourse. Over a year we culled roughly 80 possums from 5 acres of regenerating bush. I have planted trees that have not been nibbled, there are frogs on the veranda at night...not fighting possums, the birds are everywhere including a banded rail.

To carry 50,000 people per hour in each direction, a city needs a 175m wide road for cars. Even if those cars are electric. And then there’s all the parking. OR a city can move A LOT MORE people in a lot less space, with A LOT LESS public money, emissions, pollution, noise etc. Choices. Simple.

Graphic showing a 9 m wide track for metros can move as many people as a 175 m wide, 7 lane road for cars.
