Ares Lab

An RNA lab in Santa Cruz, working on splicing and the spliceosome, asking how splicing capacity is allocated to the primary transcriptome, and how intron gain affects genome evolution.

Sometimes you make a difference in a way you never expect. An acquaintance who works on a federal contract met with a political appointee. The PA asked them to do something unlawful, saying we’ll remember those who work with us. My acquaintance said: “I thought of you. And I said absolutely not.”

This is vandalism. Sean and I were "HFSPO Fellowship Reciprocals": his funding took him from his Phd in Boulder, CO to a postdoc in Cambridge, UK; mine did the inverse. He is by far the smarter of the two of us and his lab's impact on RNA biology is immense. What an unnecessary waste!

“Eddy received a letter from the [NIH], informing him that his work "had been determined to be of absolutely no value to the US taxpayer, and therefore it was being specifically terminated," he recalls. Eddy says he has given up on any dream that his funding would be restored”
