Rebecca Heineman's source code disks for Apple II, Apple IIGS, and C64 versions of "Tass Times in Tonetown" were recently imaged at KansasFest 2026 and are now archived. Burger Becky was an incredible and beloved engineer and raconteur who we sadly lost last year. archive.org/details/tass...

Title screen of the Apple IIGS version of "Tass Times in Tonetown". A white dog dives out of the smashed computer monitor. He wears red-rimmed glasses and a brown felt hat with press credentials tucked into the blue hat band. The title appears at the top, and text below reads: "Designed by Interplay Productions and Brainwave Creations, copyright 1986 Activision, Inc.

It really sucks when someone you were following for their work in the retro scene turns out to be big on AI and using it in all their projects. That instantly kills any and all interest in anything they ever make.

‘I have good news & bad news The good news is that we just started production on #ThimbleweedPark2, due out in early 2028 Mark Ferrari, Gary Winnick, David Fox, Octavi Navarro, Robert Megone, & others from the original team will be back! Now the bad news There is no bad news, it’s all good news’

Some good news from @grumpygamer.com! www.grumpygamer.com/twp2_announce/

The AI companies _want_ you to believe that it's "rogue AI" because that overhypes what their broken statistical text generation software does and mystifies it and makes it appear magical. It's not magic. It's just badly made software.

hot take: we fucked up when we let computers get so important to society that developers had to stop putting easter eggs into software because they were seen as unprofessional and untrustworthy

game devs: what are the myths that a lot of players of games think are true about making games that are completely untrue? If you could snap your fingers and they suddenly all knew the truth about it what would it be?

RIP Bobby Prince. His music legacy will live on, making inspired music for Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM, countless others. A true legend. And such a nice man, great musician, wonderful, fun-loving man, nothing but happy memories of him. A loss to the world.

I had to see this for myself and YES IT'S REAL And that insert shot of Shatner from "Star Trek II" is one of my favorite closeups ever. The shot preceding it is Shatner saying "KIRK. Admiral James T." with a sly smile on his face. The cutaway insert looks like he's sweating through a mugshot.

Do I have any engineers in my network at Valve who work on the Steamworks SDK for Mac? I’ve got an issue uploading Mac-specific content for which either there is no workaround (and therefore it’s a bug), or it’s very poorly documented. Really don’t want to have to buy a plane ticket to SEA again… 😩

An extremely funny thing about retro rereleases that use unlicensed emulators is that you are basically committing the exact same crime (using software outside of the terms of its license) that has you so scared of downloading roms in the first place but now someone has monetized it.

In case you needed another reminder that Limited Run Games are shady as fuck social.treehouse.systems/@endrift/116...

Screencap of a Mastodon thread from @endrift@treehouse.systems reading:

Fucking Limited Run Games strikes again. This time they stole mGBA! Time to break out this classic from @foone again...

Actually it looks like the publisher was WayForward. They might have licensed the emulator from LRG though? I'm not really clear. Sigma Star Saga DX.

Ok clarification time. The game was published by WayForward but they just licensed the Carbon Engine from Limited Run Games. LRG, however, integrated mGBA, presumably without disclosing it to WF, so WF is transitively violating the license. I don't blame them per se, but LRG is 100% absolutely in the wrong here. The game in question is Sigma Star Saga DX, and I have confirmed it uses mGBA by now.
