I just saw a meme that said “get in losers, we’re reclaiming the emdash”. People. PEOPLE. Where are your STANDARDS? It CLEARLY should be “get in, losers — we’re reclaiming the em dash.”

Heard this one? The City of Barcelona traded 3 lanes of vehicle traffic for an exceptional 4.7 km green pedestrian corridor in the heart of the Eixample grid. Businesses sued, & eventually won in court. Then they admitted that they actually like the change. Streets for people are good for business.

The Legal Attack on Superblock Barcelona - City Lab Barcelona

In this blog post, I attempt to unpack what this court ruling is about, the legal arguments, and who is behind it. Did the city really do something wrong?  What will happen to the Consell de Cent proj...

Also: this isn’t just about science. This will devastate the entire federal grant funding process, which means all academic research grants, arts grants, community project grants, agriculture grants, conservation grants, etc. Please leave a comment opposing this change.

TOMORROW (Monday) is the LAST DAY to leave a public comment about the proposed OMB proposal that will be an absolute disaster for science if adopted. Follow the link below for instructions on leaving a good comment.

The rise of larger vehicles like SUVs and pickup trucks, with their taller hoods and larger blind zones, has contributed to a 75% increase in pedestrian and cyclist deaths since 2009. Until we design better streets and ban these vehicles, people outside these vehicles will keep dying.

The vehicles on American roads have grown larger — and they are killing thousands more pedestrians, a Times investigation found.

Class in the US is entirely a matter of aesthetics now. Rich suburban kids are “country”. Beard Dudes who look like they love IPAs are “working class.” Teachers who make $32,000 a year but have to dress up sort of nice in JCPenney clothes are “elites“. None of these words mean anything anymore.

What is it about oyster farming in the American imagination that makes a privately educated small businessman “working class”?

yep, my kid's life saving cystic fibrosis medications that literally correct the specific protein defects that cause CF at the cellular level are due to small molecule drugs, developed by big pharmaceutical companies, addressing targets identified by NIH research

Ashwin Varma@ashwinvarma97.bsky.social · 4mo ago

They are complementary. There are essentially 0 drugs approved that didn't rely on NIH R&D. But NIH funding alone cannot deliver drugs, because NIH funding discovers new biology, but pharma R&D discovers the actual **drugs** (small molecule, monoclonal antibody) that modulates the biology.

They’re destroying more than fifty research facilities across thirty-one states, labs that house decades of irreplaceable long-term science, the kind you literally cannot restart once it’s gone. #USForestService

Well, this is simply infuriating. Someone's got to fight this in court. BREAKING: Trump Administration Orders Dismantling of the U.S. Forest Service open.substack.com/pub/morethan...

Every Justice Department or FBI employee who worked on the criminal investigations into President Donald Trump has been fired, resigned, or took early retirement, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said. https://cnn.it/4ddkUrI

Remember that time trump was being successfully being prosecuted for serious crimes and everyone in charge dragged their feet because they didn't want white supremacists to be mad at them?
