reminder that the "anthropic are shredding books because they're evil" story is ~disinformation, because the book shredding is as far as anyone can tell *required by US copyright law* and not, in fact, something anthropic chose to do because they're evil.

My secret, Cap, is that I'm *always* angry about old books. For instance, here's a tiny slice of the millions of books 1931-1986 that have no commercial value, that are digitized, but that we're unable to use in large-scale research because they are illegal to share or display.

Just in case you still use any Basecamp products, DHH is crashing out about his AI product gently pointing out that it’s bad for him to have extermination fantasies about the Roma people.

DHH tweet saying “This is why we need competition and open weights in Al. Imagine a world where only Anthropic sat as the moral arbiter of acceptable speech. Fucking ridiculous. (Grok of course did it no problem, same too with Kimi K).” when presented with his blog post using a slur about the Roma people.

officially love having an e-bike in a bike-friendly city. literally feel more freedom than i do having a car. I can just go places on a whim and minimal effort. a fuck ton of this is bc you have to worry about finding parking for a car. a bike you can lock up almost anywhere.

2026 has now surpassed 2025's number of US measles cases despite it only being the middle of the year. Get your kids vaccinated, goddamn, this is so stupid We live in an age of ever-increasing medical marvels, plz go make good use of it

You know, building public transportation networks, high-speed rail, installing bike lanes, and offering tax credits and point-of-sale rebates for e-bikes and other small EVs would go at least some way toward making sure no one ever has to be held hostage by petrostates and maniacal authoritarians.

made an unwise financial decision (i.e. bought more RAM) so that I could say the following: we have GLM-5.2 at home

Passkeys can be stored just like password hashes! I'm proposing an interoperable $webauthn$v=1$… format, and a Go API that uses these passkey records for authentication. I'm looking for feedback before proposing this as crypto/passkey for Go 1.28!

Opaque, Interoperable Passkey Records (and a Go API)

Passkey records are an interoperable format for WebAuthn credentials, similar to password hash strings. I propose a potential crypto/passkey Go API based on them.

Banning open-weight Chinese AI models would be dumb on so many levels. The rest of the world would still have access to Chinese models capable of attacking U.S. businesses.

There are no frontier open weights models that are not made in China, and there is no incentive in the US, nor appetite in the EU, to build one - it is a lot of cost, very little value capture (There are solid mid-level models, of course, but nothing close to a Kimi K3 or a GLM-5.2)
