Lawyer, writer, all-around-great person I mostly post about technology, law, and civil liberties (especially free speech), and how they intersect. And mostly at Techdirt: https://www.techdirt.com/user/cathy/ I also post silly things too.

I saw so few ads that were her (or him) speaking. But so many ads were saying horrible stuff about him in support of her, and that never sits well with me. I'm glad we (I'm in Michigan) made what appears to be the right call. But I hope she finds more ways to do good in the future too.
The next Bond should be Jodi Whitaker. (I was originally joking, but, on thinking about it, I would totally go see that movie.) (She's the right age for it, too. Bond is supposedly 42, she's 44, and obviously Bonds have been much older.) (And she's good at characters with fancy tech + vehicles.)

A lower profile MI primary but a great result. McKinney ousted an incumbent! A real shitty one.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Donavan McKinney wins Democratic nomination for U.S. House in Michigan's 13th Congressional District.
If she had spoken like this throughout she might have won.
A gracious concession: “I want to congratulate Abdul El-Sayed on winning the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. He is a doctor, a community health official, a Rhodes Scholar, and a dedicated Michigander. I am proud to offer my support as he takes on Mike Rogers in the general election…
When he was Chair of the House Intelligence Committee, Mike Rogers (the Republican candidate for Senate in Michigan) publicly took the position that "you can't have your privacy violated if you don't know your privacy is violated." Colbert had some fun with that: crooksandliars.com/cltv/2013/10...

The other thing about air travel: Airports go a lot smoother if you just assume everyone there is experiencing either their first day on earth or their worst day on earth
The thing about air travel is, it’s very specific & everyone has a job. The crew’s job is to get from A to B safe & on time. We get upset when they don’t do their job. The passengers’ job, the whole job, is to sit there & not make a problem
Don't bother me. I'm working on a new First Amendment hypothetical.

essentially every decision AIPAC has made this year they have made not just wrong but maximally wrong
The thing about tactical nukes is that we deployed them across Asia during the Cold War but withdrew them starting in the 70s (Japan/Okinawa, Taiwan, Philippines) because they were security/logistical/political headaches and basically made obsolete by sea and CONUS based forces.
The Defense Department’s policy chief is drafting a new U.S. nuclear strategy that emphasizes the possible use of shorter-range tactical weapons in case of a regional war with China or Russia, according to five people familiar with the plans. www.nbcnews.com/politics/nat...
There may well be active duty troops in the Middle East right now who have family members locked in ICE jails. Congress authorized Military Parole-in-Place specifically to avoid this situation. But the Trump admin has shown little care to families caught in this situation.
"President Donald Trump’s administration has detained dozens of parents and spouses of active-duty U.S. troops as it rolls back immigration protections for military families to pursue its mass deportation agenda." https://bit.ly/4br4M4m

Broke: Star Trek says humans will abandon all religion in the future. Woke: Dune says religion will continue to be both a source of strength and a tool of control for oppressed peoples. Bespoke: Babylon 5 says we'll get MORE religions, and Jews will have to sort out what alien foods are kosher.

A lot is better than 40 years ago. But a lot is worse than 10 years ago, which may be why we have so much nostalgia. (And some things were better 40 years ago - kids had more freedom, for instance.)
Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

i just cant understand why voters are flocking to outsider candidates instead of sticking with the establishment picks
I was appalled (though not surprised) when I learned Sunday that Senate Dems intend to help Republicans fund the government through the election, with one minimal concession that has nothing to do with election subversion or ongoing Trump theft of federal dollars from blue states. And I remain so.
Elissa Slotkin, who believes she's running for president, endorsed and did straight-to-camera ads for Maasdam. Woeful underperformance from him here.
Climate activist William Lawrence, an outspoken progressive, has won the Dem nod for swingy #MI07, held by GOP Rep. Tom Barrett. Lawrence was aided by the fact that two more moderate candidates appeared to split the vote.

Yeah, it seems like literally every Michigan primary poll got the margin wrong by at least 8 points and gave the candidates completely incorrect coalitions
So El-Sayed is doing better with Black voters and worse with white voters than most people imagined? That’ll be fun for The Discourse.
I like McMorrow - I think she picked/got stuck with bad consultants for her Senate campaign and got bad advice. I actually think that in a 2-way race against either Stevens or El-Sayed, she would have won, but in a 3-way race her lane just wasn't there.
