Sweet bleeding Mithras, almost everything is SO MUCH BETTER than it was 40 years ago. Air travel I grant you (with the exception of SMOKING ON PLANES). But medical technology? The availability of so many foods? Air pollution? It's just so much better now.
Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

Have seen both The Odyssey and Spider-Man in the past four days, so my Holland/Bernthal/Zendaya cup floweth over.
With Europe’s borders back in the headlines, please consider reading ‘My Fourth Time, We Drowned’ if you haven’t already. It’s very important to have a fuller picture before weighing in.
A reminder that 'My Fourth Time, We Drowned' is now available in Spanish 🇪🇸: capitanswing.com/libros/cuand... Italian 🇮🇹: www.bollatiboringhieri.it/libri/sally-... French 🇫🇷: www.buchetchastel.fr/catalogue/bi... Dutch 🇳🇱: nieuwamsterdam.nl/producten/en... Polish 🇵🇱: soniadraga.pl/postfactum/p...
Bluesky oldheads will remember that brief period of time when the conservative trolls tried to storm the place and were flummoxed by the idea they would have to organically grow an audience and that someone who didn't want to talk to them could nuke every interaction they ever had from orbit
Its a lib "bubble" because MAGA can't stick dick opinions in my face without a block. People like bluesky because unlike Twitter you can curate/filter out stupid bullshit. The only reason conservatives hate it is because they cant force you to pay attention to them. That better not fucking change.
Bluesky's new CEO Toni Schneider on the platform's reputation for being a liberal bubble: "Yes, we definitely want that to change. It is already changing. It certainly wasn’t designed to attract one specific group of people."

A Massachusetts farm is integrating solar panels above berry fields. This agrivoltaics project generates electricity while shading the crops. The elevated panels create a cooler microclimate, retain...

I despise Substack and have previously said I will never read it (and I don't). But I will break my rule just for this eally disturbing piece of writing by Neko Case, who was / is in a band, The New Pornographers, who were supported by The Frames in 2002. nekocase.substack.com/p/in-what-fu...

never thought short form video would be able to capture a type of humor i can only describe as “the far side-esque” but this comes close.
Even if it’s not as warm as it has been, there are still times you need to throw yourself in the tide.
I just... I feel like I'm going a bit mad? The British government very visibly opposed locking down, we spent all of November 2020 ignoring every sign in order to "save Christmas." The BBC's weakness was not deference to science, but to the government! Laura K was reposting videos of buckets!
No need for anyone to agree with me - but some of the responses to this on here reminds me just how stifling and absolutist a period in our national discourse Covid was.
So the key findings of Amnesty's report was that these anti-rights groups have massive funding, that it comes largely from far-right christian groups in the US, and that they're abusing UK charity law to misrepresent themselves as pro-rights organisations.
A playbook repeated from Turkey to Norway to Belarus. Rather than recognising it Europe’s right took an opportunity to pile on to a centre-left leader they resent: domestic troubles aside, Sanchez has outperformed them on economic growth while seeing a green energy switch pay off
Thoughts on the dead singer. Yesterday, my middle aged straight hairy biker son went on one on social media about the dead singer and those eulogising him. He did not hold back. What was unusual was that he took to social media to vent knowing it would attract vile bile. I asked him why.
Don't worry folks, your Minister of State in the Department of Agriculture is only *personally* a climate denialist and far-right wannabe.
Noel Grealish attended ‘anti-woke’ conference addressed by Nigel Farage. Department of Agriculture confirms his attendance at the event but says the Minister of State for Agriculture was present in personal capacity. www.irishtimes.com/politics/202...

The way we stop upland fires is dramatic rewetting and rewilding of our hills and reducing emissions like it's a life or death situation... Using every lever available to the state domestically and internationally to immediately cut emissions everywhere. It's literally the only way we can stop them
Guy who went on holiday to Toontown and made it his whole personality:
After my parents were visiting set for the first time, I asked my dad what he thought. He said “I didnt realize, it’s like you’re building a house, and once an hour good looking people run in and put on a play for five minutes. Then they leave and you go back to construction.”
People think "Hollywood" is rich and famous. The reality? Film and TV is a national industry. It's a blue collar industry. And it is an industry free fall. Really interesting story here. You know how the hyperscaler cowboys are powering their data centers with gas turbines? It turns out the demands of AI are not very friendly to those turbines. They're supposed to last 5+ years & instead they're wearing out in under 12 months!
Here's the deal with the pre-review study Tesla funded on turbine carnage. This is my first piece on the Data Centers Breaking Things beat. TLDR; AI training is wearing out, even breaking, a critical source of energy for AI training www.investors.com/news/turbine...
