I can't stress this enough: Your local library. You would be amazed how many different groups, clubs, and orgs use your local library for holding events, publicity, teaching classes, or just a communal space. Libraries have never been more tech savvy. Go to their website. Look on their calendar.

[Someone asked how I find classes but has quotes off and I think it's a Q of broader interest] Sometimes I just pay attention to what friends are doing or what orgs around me are offering, sometimes I think of a thing I might enjoy and then I search for whether classes are available in my city

My high school and college experience was pretty much watching every career path I was ever interested in get sucked dry by venture capitalists and tech industry idiots. I worry that we haven't begun to see the farthest reaching consequences of American industry's hard turn away from the arts.

If I were ten years older I absolutely would’ve pursued music journalism over film, but even 2006 high school journalist K8 unfortunately knew that was not going to be a sustainable career path. Imagine trying to launch a new rock and roll band in this landscape, where do you even GO!

Ok sorry. Anyone still out there giving Ken Jennings the benefit of the doubt as a transphobe? He is a transphobe. So pretend he didn't endanger the life of a trans woman making her internationally famous for hurting his feelings. He blocks cool, critically minded trans women like Sage. He's trash.

Sage Deviant 🏳️‍⚧️@trans.bsky.social · yesterday

wow, i was not expecting to be blocked by @kenjennings.bsky.social over this. We’ve previously interacted in friendly ways, so i reached out in good faith & not trying to drag him. I was giving the benefit of the doubt that maybe his transphobic behavior was unintended. really disappointing.

It's telling that every homeless person, even sober, is automatically a sign of "the drug problem." But belligerently intoxicated tourists — a far worse danger to those of us living and working downtown — somehow never are.

If you're a Warren Zevon fan you'll know that his favourite crime writer Ross McDonald visited him when he was in the dregs of addiction to give him a pep talk but this account of their meeting is a rivetting & haunting read that adds mystery to the anecdote: kevin6ca.substack.com/p/lew-archer...

LEW ARCHER AND THE EXCITABLE BOY

Earlier this year I read two excellent crime novels written by Newton Thornburg – To Die in California (1973) and Cutter and Bone (1976) – both of them set in Santa Barbara, California.

We already have a shitty, exclusionary place in sports: it's called men's sports. They built it like that on purpose. Let them own it and figure that out for themselves. Women's sports were built in opposition to that structure, built for inclusion. The WNBA has represented the best of that.

Had this experience far too many times over the years as a prolific freelancer and eventually I just said fuck it I’m never freelancing again. And then I never did. Also why I pay Hell World writers the day the piece goes up.

Well, it’s invoicing day, and since they’re really apparently not going to pay me for something I wrote for them two months ago, I guess today is the day to post about how @vulture.com fucks over its film freelancers. Long (sorry) thread, with receipts:

Once again maddening for all the big outlets to have slowly killed their cultural criticism spaces only for the loudest headline in the last 24 hours to be cultural critique

I love the idea of a little free movie library but can we not brand them with the husk of the corporate ghoul that put all the independent video stores out to pasture? I am, perhaps, a little jaded as my family ran a video store in the 80s/early 90s.

I spent the last few weeks writing this piece about the end of tennis.com -- what it was like during the peak of the blog days, how it influenced young writers, how it changed in tandem with the Internet, and the void that's left now that it's gone. Gift link: defector.com/tennis-com-l...

Tennis.com Lived And Died With The Internet | Defector

A day after the French Open ended in May, the website tennis.com shut down its editorial operation. The brand dates back to the founding of Tennis magazine in 1965, and though the mag folded in 2022, ...
