Hungary's PM Péter Magyar: “Due to the further drop in the Danube's water level, one of the last two generating units at the Paks Nuclear Power Plant will be shut down at 1:30 am… “…tomorrow it will be completely shut down for the first time in 44 years.” #climatecrisis

Horrific. We need full accountability. Rogue, unidentifiable federal agents terrorizing our communities fostered the atmosphere where this type of assault was possible—and is just one reason why I’m fighting for a bill to require ICE to display ID.

9/9 So when you hear, "It's less than 10 we shouldn't pay attention to this!" that's wrong. The number we should be paying attention to is 33,000. Bigots have bullied 33,000 trans kids out of the opportunity to play games with their friends. 33,000 kids is a lot. More than enough to matter.

I'm re-reading LeGuin's superb "The Hainish Novels" (this copy being the one that taught me not to judge a book by its cover) for the third time in 25 years and happy to report it holds up flawlessly and she is still my favorite author.

Cover of a book.

It's not one guy, and don't let this slide. There are a lot of authors to this situation. In the past, if there's a recovery, the corporate and billionaire money that's the motive force slips away until there's another opportunity. But like January 6, this has to be the definition of our society.

The American Geophysical Union comes to the defense of the National Academies: "This is science that protects and preserves lives and livelihoods. Calls for suspension or debarment from federal funding for this crucial information is dangerous and misguided." www.eenews.net/articles/tru...

As one of the first generations post title IX, it was not easy getting to have fair access to sports- and as we’ve seen multiple times (bcz we’ve only just recently started actually even paying attention to women’s sports as a country) top level pro and colleges teams are STILL strugggling-

More than this, excluding trans women and girls is a perversion of the historical purpose of women's sports The purpose of women's sports was not to give women a chance to win It was to give women a chance to play sports AT ALL

People have been asking me this question for decades. The answer is in most places, reducing demand by improving efficiency and cutting waste, and recycling and reusing wastewater, are cheaper, easier, and more environmentally beneficial than desalination. www.bostonglobe.com/2026/07/19/o...

The world needs more fresh water. Why isn’t desalination the answer? - The Boston Globe

There is obvious demand for the technology. And solar power should be making it more economical. If only it were that simple.

Not that we didn't know this already but having ICE - whose jurisdiction has absolutely NOTHING to do with elections - investigate voter fraud gives away the game. ICE is no longer a legal entity bound by laws and norms, it's Trump's personal force, focusing on whatever he wants.

NEW: DHS plans to pay Thomson Reuters $125 million for access to its databases which includes peoples’ names, addresses, Social Security numbers, ethnicity, social media posts, and geolocation information — to help ICE investigate “voter fraud”, according to documents reviewed by 404 Media.

Federal contractors were staging buoys in Eagle Pass. These buoys are meant to deter migrants from crossing the Rio Grande. During flood conditions this week, the buoys were washed into the river and forced the city to close its bridges. www.texastribune.org/2026/07/17/t...

My heart goes out to them, but it drives me crazy how as soon as people in the rural South have a concrete example of how Republican policies are evil, they default to “this is not a left/right issue”. It IS, though! This is what deregulation looks like! You could have ALWAYS been against this!

The noise from a plant powering Elon Musk's xAI data centers in Mississippi is keep residents awake and destroying their quality of life. Residents of Southaven, MI, have organized, gone to hearings, and talked to the media. But so far the mayor's advice is: "Consider selling."

Addendum: This is the same issue we now have with ultra-high net worth individuals & the companies they own &/or control. They don't have the right to do what they're doing, they have the power. Until/unless some opposing power applies equal or greater forcer to them, they'll continue on.

The Republican Party has an entire vital infrastructure of businesses, nonprofits and churches that are all extremely vulnerable. Democratic electeds, whenever they have the power, should gleefully take a sledgehammer to whatever piece of it is close by.

I really don’t think anyone has priced in how much appetite there is on our side for a politics of pure revenge, justice dispensed in wholesale rather than at retail

Trump doesn’t force people to do bad things. All he did was show people they could get away with being horrible if they really wanted to, and a lot of powerful people decided they didn’t need to pretend anymore. Especially those in influential positions who could push back but did not.

As a historian, I have to tell you: The victors don’t always write history. Very often it’s written by losers lying through their fucking teeth to survive in a world run by the winners. Thinking about this today for no particular reason
