I was moved to hear from a trans former student this week about how much it helped her figure out her gender expression to read Jan Morris in my class back in 2018. I always introduce Morris as a trans pioneer, and that was who she needed to find. A reminder that a syllabus can change lives.

ICE: "We're going to start using torture gloves against the public." Public: "What the fuck, you should not have those." Omaha PD: "What's the big deal, we have them." Public: "what" Omaha PD: "We use them on school children."
The electric shock gloves ICE is spending up to $20 million on are already being given to police officers in Omaha public schools | Fortune
The Omaha Police Department was awarded more than $65,000 for 40 pairs of the gloves in May 2025.

There's a post on reddit where ppl are talking rationally about Tony vs Steve in CACW and... I can't decide if that means the world is healing or if it's a sign of the apocalypse
as an outside observer it really feels like the pitt has had 3 seasons in approximately 3 months, and I cannot express how jealous I am of people who can watch graphic medical dramas 😭
I am becoming incredibly exhausted of this pattern: many people: "AI sucks!" Very Smart Person: ah but have you considered (distinct application of ML or statistical modeling that has no real relationship to what the tech industry is marketing as, and people broadly perceive as, "AI")
apropos of nothing, here's a terrific feature about a meaningful, life-saving use of artificial intelligence, which I have been thinking about for over a year. it's just extremely stupid to say that AI has zero benefits even if you don't think it should be used in writing (which I don't)!
I found that the entire run of the Adventures of Pete and Pete is up on youtube including the original shorts that I don't remember at all: youtu.be/tvx3ZPGt8y4?... look how young these babies were omg

I'll use an em dash irdgaf. I'll pull an em dash out of my screen and beat a Tesla robot to death with it. I'll move to a cave and sharpen an em dash and use it as a spear to hunt game with... it's so whatever....
The more that stories like this get leaked, the more I'm convinced that there's some exec that everyone hates pushing AI and creators are rushing to make up useless busywork for a program to do just to get the exec to shut up and go away.
The art book for ‘SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY’ reveals that generative AI was used in concept design of NYC for the film. (Source: thedirect.com/article/spid...)
Explain to me how Mark Zuckerberg has a lower body-count than Osama Bin Laden. I'll wait.
When a group of people openly lay out their desire to end democracy and imprison their ideological opponents, you should treat them like the murderers they are.

I really don't care if people who are nominally above the poverty line are able to get subsidized groceries or healthcare! It's an insane way to look at the world!
I'm still cracking up at the city council member saying, "Thank you. Darth Vader?"
Lost my job so now I have to find a new one for the first time in 13 years. Scary stuff! In the meantime I’ll be recording more podcasts in hopes that Patreon can help keeps the lights on lol www.patreon.com/monsterofthe...

If a baby hands you a toy telephone to answer, that's a sign of great respect in their culture.
I wish it were easier to communicate that your moral opposition to GLP-1s and ADHD meds makes you indistinguishable from RFK Jr, but leftishly.
ADHD medication falls foul of the same purity test as GLP1s. Namely that if people just “tried harder” to not be like that then they wouldn’t need the medication.
i feel like we all collectively have the same relationship to dril that my parents had to monty python
We shouldn't discount the fact that at least part of the data center backlash (and by extension the broader techlash) is because people feel like the tech industry has not given them anything cool, inspiring, beautiful, or useful in a long time
also this kind of scam, whether from a political party or a private company, is what like 75% of our incoming phone calls and texts are. we let it fully degrade our communications network. there's no political will to stop it because they are on the take. also everything in america is just like this
To the non-Americans on this site: would you be shocked to learn that your political party was fundraising using elder financial exploitation tactics on vulnerable seniors? Because both major parties in the US are doing exactly that and few people in power seem to care or consider it a big deal.
Part of the reason a lot of super rich people are so awful is that when normal people get an absurd amount of money, they immediately start looking around for who they can help.
Rachel Reid, who wrote the popular “Heated Rivalry” novel, has donated $300k to Annapolis Valley Regional Library, “one of the most significant private gifts” in their history. “I credit my local library for being a huge part of the reason I’m a published author today,” Reid said #Halifax #HaliSky
once we found horse racing twitter because they made a big fuss about serena williams getting named athlete of the year because they thought the award should have been given to a horse
The fantasy that we're all a single unfortunate event (earthquake, extended power outage, alien invasion, zombie apocalypse) from turning one one another, ripping one another to shreds while rushing to reinstitute slavery and abolish feminist gains ASAP, has always felt. REALLY republican, to me.
💯💯💯 The human superpower is cooperation. Other animals live in family units, share resources, hunt as a group, use tools. But our collectivism is what got us where we are. Not barely-restrained compulsions to murder.
There's ancient remains where the person who died didn't have teeth, clearly could no longer walk or hunt, but died of old age. Meaning the others cared for him. I was talking about this with my husband yesterday. About how we've always been the same, we've always loved Grandpa and Grandma
Suspense is not created by your audience not knowing what happens next. It's created by your audience CARING what happens next.
www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/h... I really love this — the notion that it's about feelings, not plot twists. I wish more stories took this approach. Yes, even thrillers. Twists are rarely as surprising as the choices people make from the heart.
