Since Sep 2022, I've been building a website where you can find out who owns rural Scotland. Today I am publishing the latest update (July 2026) which contains ownership information on 5050 landholdings covering 5.9 million hectares (14.7 million acres) or over 77% of rural Scotland 1/2

Wollstonecraft on forest fires & climate grief, from 1796: "The devastation must, indeed, be terrible, when this, literally speaking, wild fire, runs along the forest, flying from top to top, & crackling amongst the branches. . . the country, despoiled of beauty & riches, is left to mourn for ages."

I love the monsters kids come up with for this workshop - including "a kelpie that sucks your blood (only the size of thumbelina)" and "a giant turtle that sticks driftwood to its back (so it can plunge down to the depths with shipwrecked mariners and drown them)". Lovely, ghoulish, no notes.

Just going to say here, I think I've said this before, a 'historically accurate' version of the Odyssey is not possible because the Odyssey does not take place in a historical setting - it takes place in a fantastical pastiche of four centuries, mixed in with gods and monsters.

JUST IN: Elon Musk says Grok will make a "full-length movie" of The Odyssey that is "historically accurate" by the end of this year.

Dear journalists, pesky immigrant here, so what do I know … But here’s a visual aid for you: Manchester is not “the north”. Seriously: it’s actually getting insulting now given how many have pointed out how wrong and unhelpful all of that nonsense is (and even within a northern England corridor).

Map of the UK that shows how Manchester wouldn’t even be the middle.
