It's interesting that I see all of this in one job. I write, teach, analyse data, develop small tools, ... The bifurcation is real. I can now teach research students to run fairly complex data simulations in 12 weeks but at the same time I need to check all their reference lists.

this is very cool, a lot of fun to read - and one of the many takeaways from it is that Homer is already sort of "non-canon" vis-a-vis previous Greek religious practice, as is a lot of what i'd call the "D'Aulaire's model" of "Greek mythology" that we've gotten in the modern west

A world in which the likes of Musk and Thiel have the kind of power the technology gives them is a worse one.
Understanding this and its full implications will give you a better understanding of Economy than 99% of the population.
Matt Darling@besttrousers.bsky.social · 7h agoBasically, recessions are caused by "everyone trying to save money at the same time". This is a problem because at an aggregate level, everyone's income is the same as everyone's spending.
The kids had to be escorted to the airport by police, and their hope was that the whole thing would blow over; obviously, the first thing they did was talk to Italian media about it. Facebook (yes, I went to the hellscape) is filled with what you would expect--comments about gas chambers and so on.
Local media have been desperate to bury this story for the past day, but after it sparked a furor in Italian outlets, they're now downplaying it as a youth-related incident, and insisting both sides were loud and disruptive.
I generally avoid discussing Bulgarian events here (unless it's something positive) but I'm going to break my rule for a bit. Some local skinheads attacked a Jewish youth gathering (several hundred kids from Italy, Israel, Netherlands, etc.) at their hotel in Bansko; nazi salutes and the rest.
