"This election is about the threat of trans kids" is the worst possible messaging for Dems yet so many candidates are leaning into it. No voter will flip R->D over it. Low-info voters read this as "you're focused on bullshit that doesn't affect me" while the base reads this as "you're an asshole."

Incredibly disappointing ad from Mary Peltola (D-AK) saying she neither supports "kids getting surgeries to change genders or men in girls bathrooms." Yes, flipping the Senate is essential and can stop bad laws and bad judges from happening, but she can do it without my support from the lower 48.

A useful way to think about it is to imagine a republican candidate saying one thing that you liked, agreeing with you on exactly one issue. That would totally work, right? Donald Trump announces he’s for one thing you are also for and then you vote for him. See how stupid it sounds.

a lot of people act like there's a trade being offered where we give up trans athletes in sports and in exchange fascism is defeated forever

Republicans know that too, but they also know this is something they can make Dems flinch and equivocate about, which makes them look overall weak and indecisive. They did it with immigration last cycle, they did it with gay marriage 20 years ago. The only way to win is to tell them to eat shit

I have to keep saying this. Trans rights are very unpopular on face but extremely sensitive to persuasion and question wording. In other words very few people care deeply about them, one way or another. Electorally, there is no advantage or penalty for Democrats to take one way or another.

"Democracy is bad, we should have an autocracy instead" isn't the incidental outcome of other inchoate populist impulses. It's what they sincerely and consciously believe, it's a real ideology and they know symbols matter as a reenforcing affirmation of a polity's governing ideological commitments.

When will the people who argued in April 2025 that Democrats should stay silent on immigration own up to being frankly just disastrously wrong about the politics of mass deportations? Their punditry basically bordered on enablement

Florida GOP Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar to Trump: "Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far ... The same Hispanics who helped you get to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today"

i see a lot of debate around this issue that takes it for granted that supporting trans rights (especially in the sports context) will hurt you electorally. it’s worth highlighting that that’s just not what the data shows.

Your family is psychically vulnerable to President Carter’s wandering spirit. He can enter minds and infect them with thoughts of solar panels. To prevent this you can make or buy a specially designed net to ensnare his ghost, and it’s also a piece of art that brings both protection and beauty.

My great uncle was a jesuit priest in remote India in the 50s, and he wrote a book about his time there. There was a tiger causing problems near the villages, and he had no luck hunting it with his rifle. So an elder in the village - one of the only people who knew how - set up The Great Tiger Bow.

This is not how we fought lions unless stuff was going very wrong. We got a bunch of us together and we all got sharp, long sticks and we poked the murder kitties from a distance. Before we could do that we went to the trees.

I think one reason Mamdani is using non-traditional media is because traditional media isn't covering substantive government stories The two reporters on this topic cover the Mamdani administration but mostly from the perspective of conflicts. Too much theater, not enough substance.

"Mr. Mamdani is a master of new media... But as mayor, he has also been able to use taxpayer funds to create a sprawling network of hundreds of friendly influencers to boost his priorities, provide positive depictions of his administration and enhance his popularity."

Google did not have to change Google Maps to comply with Trump's order. This is a choice they are making, pretending that they are removing themselves from controversy while actually inserting themselves in the centre. There are any number of procedural hurdles they could invent to slow-walk this.

The default judgment rural voters will make when this happens is that it must be the Democrats' fault. But that isn't written in stone. Which is why Dems must do something they never do: Go to rural America and attack Republicans. Not just listen and express empathy, but ATTACK.

Rural hospitals closing or shutting down key departments like obstetrics will be one of the biggest stories of 2027. Democrats need to make it one of the biggest stories of the next two months.
