An interesting argument I have seen elsewhere: Hormuz has important implications for Europe's ability to blockade Russian oil.

The policy implications from all this are immediate. The West pulled its punches on Russia back in 2022 because of concern that an outright blockade could lead to a big spike in oil prices that might drive the global economy into recession. Indeed, at the time there was one investment bank that had an oil price forecast of $380. We know this stuff is nonsense now thanks to the past few months. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is a far bigger shock than blockading Russian oil could ever be. Russia's oil exports out of the Baltic are about double what Iran was exporting before the US imposed its blockade. We've learned that a blockade can be done, that it adversely impacts the target country and - most importantly - that it doesn't uncontrollably spike oil prices. The immediate lesson is therefore for Europe, which - if it doesn't want to do an outright blockade of Russia in the Danish Straits - can easily clamp down on the shadow fleet. the ygelsias et al. position that every academic needs to exercise ironclad message discipline is obviously untenable and unrealistic, but I do think academics are poorly served by professional organizations, the people who should know better, being pretty tone deaf and inept.

When scientific journals started endorsing candidates, this led to a drop in trust in science and had no meaningful electoral consequences. All downside for science. No upside for the endorsed candidates.

I am not an AAUP member, but I think it is a really bad idea for the American Association of University Professors to be endorsing candidates, especially in a factional Democratic primary.

Before GRANT, LAGOA, and WILSON, Circuit Judges. GRANT, Circuit Judge: "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech." U.S. Const. amend I. The First Amendment, incorporated against the States in 1868, is this country's written commitment to the idea that freedom of speech is essential to freedom of thought, and that both are essential to maintaining our liberty. The Supreme Court has long been clear that teaching and scholarship are due some measure of protection under the Amendment. But how much? And in what contexts? That Court has not had to say, but this one is now put to the test. The State of Florida legislated a broad set of speech restrictions banning certain viewpoints relating to race, color, sex, and national origin in various settings. The provision at issue here bars Florida's educators from promoting or endorsing those distavored ideas when instructing students. Its prohibition applies not only in primary and secondary education, where states traditionally exercise a great deal of control, but also in public colleges and universities, where the state government's role has been far more limited. When several groups of professors challenged Florida's new restrictions, the State cast about for an existing case or doctrine that could support its speech ban in the university setting.
