You guys want to hear a short but adorable story that happened right in front of me at the baggage claim in NYC yesterday? I wasn't part of it and there are bits I didn't catch but holy crap, I can't stop thinking about it.

In 1974, Cornell lecturer Lin Farley began recognizing a pattern in the experiences women shared in her Women and Work course: women were being pushed out of jobs by men’s sexual behavior. Farley coined the term, “sexual harassment.”

What’s the evidence on rent control? I charted the findings from 112 studies: Great for rent-controlled tenants ✅ But: Pushes up rents for other people ❌ Pushes down new housing construction ❌ Pushes down building quality ❌

@greatdismal.bsky.social i just reread Pattern Recognition (at least the fifth read for me). Thank you for such a great book (and for so many others). I am traveling a bit, so those parts land, but the mirror world blending into “normal” hits too. But mostly, I just love reading it.

I know we’re all thinking about what happened at Cornell. But I also can’t stop thinking about Emma Sulkowicz and all the other young women forced to carry that weight. Read my column at the newsletter 💜

This is *the* piece. Kate Manne, professor of philosophy at Cornell, speaks truth to the totality of failures at the university — and why students protesting the war in Gaza have faced far harsher consequences than any of the Cornell 7: www.thecut.com/article/what...

What It Feels Like at Cornell Right Now

As a professor at the Ivy League school, Kate Manne has known many, many victims. There’s a palpable feeling on campus, she writes, that this is big.

The jackals are out, as they usually are for a woman who speaks up in a way that challenges patriarchy. (And a lot of why victims don't come forward or withdraw--as a Weinstein victim did--is because the misogynist public and legal system launch their own punitive assaults.)

A truly heinous man has doxxed the Cornell victim on X and the comments are predictably vile. Based on countless interviews I’ve done with survivors, the trauma they are subjected to for coming forward is oftentimes even worse than the initial trauma they experienced. There is no real justice system

Stop telling women what to do. Stop telling us to do all of the work. Stop acting like you know more about our struggle than we do. Stand up for your fellow human being without any reward because that’s what we’re supposed to do. Ffs.

That's because you (and I), unlike Kai, have had to actually hire people to do real jobs and aren't in the business of making up unspoken tests to disqualify otherwise perfectly suitable candidates. Kai has lived his entire professional life being a bullshitter on the air so the stakes are lower.

the thing with luxury condos is that they're mostly a myth. 1. within the same county, condos sell for 35% less than single family homes 2. within the same neighborhood, they sell for 43% less 3. within the same neighborhood and adjusting for some quality characteristics, they sell for 21% less

A n'hood assoc. colleague remarked that "getting more housing downtown will be impossible" as the downtown is "already very built up." I hold a different impression of my community, so I took to Google MyMaps to graphically illustrate just how much land in downtown on which there is left to build.

approximately one industry in our civilization has figured out "systematically keep track of things that go wrong, and then systematically try to prevent them from happening again", and this is the result

Please know that this is one of my few legitimate areas of actual, high-level professional expertise: Kicking the healthiest people off of a health insurance program will bankrupt it. Not 'could;' not 'might,' not 'probably," but absolutely will, with mathematical certainty.

Dr Oz says the Trump administration will kick more than a million people off health insurance because some of them have "never filed a claim"
