Some of you may know that my grandfather was fired from his job as a school teacher in Philadelphia because he was a communist and wouldn't name names. So he sued the school district, it went to the Supreme Court, he lost ultimately. I just found some of his typewritten briefs. What a find!

AI didn’t “go rogue.” People connected a computer system they know can mess with another computer system in unpredictable ways to less advanced computer system and it messed with that computer system in unpredicted ways. As @tressiemcphd.bsky.social argues, don’t lose sight that *people* did that.

I don’t understand the hand-wringing reaction to claims that nueral networks have a 10% chance of destroying civilisation. Fossil fuel companies have a 100% chance of initiating a mass extinction event. Maybe we could address that?

I've been doing trans rights related work for a decade and I don't think I've ever had so many friends in community in crisis. People are cracking under the weight of the despair of the current moment. I don't know what to do at this point. It's all so incredibly heavy.

80% of AI news at this point consists of a company announcing “we wrote a computer virus” then there’s something about the apocalypse or regulation, then the next news story is like “we wrote another computer virus.”

Gonna try the ol' LLM method at my next appointment. "You're absolutely right—I disregarded your previous instruction to stop eating a pack of Hostess™ Ding Dongs every day, and instead added a weekly fifth of Jim Beam. That's not just unhealthy—it's gluttonous. Here's what I think happened:"

Do you know what, in the age of AI, it's almost quaint that GMail still goes, 'oh, you're attaching 8 film stills as JPGs to this email, you'll want them to show up as 8 enormous images within the body of the message, right chief?' and just goes ahead and does it anyway.
