I think people are treating it like a magic thinking machine, or a friendly art fairy. But it's a massive mouth, slurping up art, creativity, facts and environmental resources to chew them all up into a easily swallowed pap.

I was with a panel of people who were all making good arguments about why AI will never replace this or that skill or job, so maybe we'll be okay, and I finally said to one teacher: "you can just say no. you don't have to use it. it steals from people and teaches no skills. it's not a good tool."

Some more shots of the cover and slipcase for this. Since STATION ELEVEN jumps back and forth over the course of twenty years, before/after, I wanted to bring that sense of lapsed time to the packaging. Folio told me they’ve never tried something like this before. I’m thrilled they took a chance!

Really excited to announce my second book for Folio Society. STATION ELEVEN came to me many years ago exactly when I needed it the most. A book about the endurance of art, about remembering and forgetting and about forgiveness, I was so honored that Folio asked me to illustrate it. Out on March 3rd!

Photo of Folio Society's STATION ELEVEN by Emily St. John Mandel, the book and the slipcase both feature the same scene, a gas station by a road, both before and after the pandemic that decimates humanity in the book.

Sick of everyone pretending there’s “intelligence” here. We have no idea how intelligence works, we have no concept of how to recreate it, but we know damn well that it doesn’t just come into existence when a typewriter has pounded out enough words in a chain.
