Perpetually annoyed game designer, writer, mediocre musician. Chief Creative Officer at @fasttravelgames.bsky.social. Currently building Payday: Aces High with a great team. Be nice.

The video game industry has always been volatile (I published Press Reset in 2021!) but the skeleton key to understanding the current state of things is this: Big games now cost 10x to make what they did 15 years ago but most do not generate even close to 10x the revenue. Simple as that

This is such a sensible and obvious way to look at games (or movies, or paintings, or poems, or other writing, or music, or, or, or, or etc) that it almost feels weird seeing it stated like this. Anyway, looking forward to reading this book!

Addendum because I forgot to include this yesterday: Q. So Reacher is called Reacher because he can reach things on high shelves, yes? A. Literally, yes! An old woman asked Lee Child (who is 6'4") to reach something in a supermarket and that is how he came up with the name. I am not kidding.

“There’s a new Mr. Beast book.” You bolt awake in your workshop in Mainz. It’s 1450. You’re Johannes Gutenberg, and you’ve changed your mind. The future cannot come to pass. Your printing press must burn.

Remember how we spent DECADES not making a single video game anyone wanted to play, but we pushed past the universal public scorn, burning trillions of dollars in the process and then - purely by accident and with no precedent or inspiration - Half Life 2 was made and now people finally like games.
