I'm weirdly finding that as I get older, it's easier to learn new skills, which is the opposite of what I thought was supposed to happen. I don't think we're giving enough credit to a lifetime of built skills. When new skills have overlap w/existing ones it greases the wheels for the new.

Eb@ebthen.bsky.social · 3y agoThe focus is always "how do you expect people to want to be better if you're mean to them instead of holding their hands and patiently, gently teaching them" and not "pain understandably does not make it easy to be patient and it is not your job to have to teach people how to not harm you".
Very early in the pandemic, I spent 2 terrible weeks in isolation, unable to breathe or walk across the room. Waiting my temp. to spike. Worrying about my kids. Fighting against dying. In the middle of this covid revisionist, anti-vax bullshit, it was worth saying what that felt like:
things are very hard and sometimes you don't know how the fuck you're gonna get through but then you do. and everything can be so dark and still several times a day you get to experience some beautiful moment of being alive in the universe. books and cats and kids exist and so does rfk. it's a lot.
Tomorrow is the last day to file for a special election replacing McConnell in Kentucky, so I expect sometime after Five o' clock tomorrow night he might suddenly pass away due to complications from a fall he suffered some weeks back.

Americans talk about “lockdowns” as though we experienced a uniform national policy. We didn’t! We had a patchwork of state and local responses. Treating “lockdown” as the single explanation for everything that followed erases that complexity AND the deeper problems that long predated COVID.
It’s super unserious to live to witness our pre-apocalyptic hellworld that went from being a boundless source of infinite sustenance to having a crumbling ecosystem only since the 3rd Industrial Revolution & fix your mouth to say that it is the socialists that are going to kill us all.
my neighborhood 7-11 closed a couple years ago and tried to reopen but couldn’t get the permit approved because there’s a preschool next door and 7-11s sell alcohol (the previous permit was grandfathered in). i saw a fence going up around the lot recently and looked up what was moving in: a gun shop

Please stop saying “lockdowns.” There were never true lockdowns in the US, and it fuels far right narratives to repeat this inaccurate statement. You can say closures, you can say restrictions, or better, you can say public health measures which saved many lives.

We had stay-at-home orders, where although businesses were closed, you could still go outside whenever you wanted. Other countries had far stricter rules, and yet have been much more accepting of them as they saved many more lives.
Watched a multi-acre fire break out before my very eyes and then watched a bunch of helicopters show up and put it out. Government was a good idea, it should do more things like that instead of evil and corruption

#OldTrailsFire in Spokane now appears to be most destructive wildfire in WA State history by wide margin (650+ structures lost), w/additional TBD losses nearby. Other PacNW fires actively burning, though less destructive, are far larger & could burn for weeks amid severe drought.
Trump in a nutshell: he doesn't self-regulate. If you've cared for a toddler, someone with dementia, or a person who, like Trump, doesn't self-regulate for whatever reason, you know that everyone around that person must maintain firm boundaries/limits at all times. Otherwise, you get this.
