Here for a nice, chill time.

I charted city property tax revenue in real dollars vs the Seattle-area inflation rate for my little city. Everything is bad but post-COVID inflation (including tariffs, trade wars, wars, labor, etc.) is just killing cities. Road construction costs are up like 70% year over year.

Property tax in nominal dollars vs Buying power according to the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue CPI-U. Nominal dollars rise fairly linearly at around 1-2% (1% is the baseline, supplemented by increases due to redevelopment).

Buying power declines steadily from 2001 to about 2020, then inflation absolutely devastates the buying power. A decline from ~$4.8 million in 2001 to about $4.4 million in 2020 becomes ~$3.6 million by 2026.

Washington has an utterly insane provision in its constitution saying that cities can only increase property taxes by 1% a year, and predictably, a bunch of cities are going broke.

You don't have to like Israel's current government! You don't even have to agree with the political process that went into the creation of the Israeli state! But in this context, posting about "the Israelis" is just posting about "the Jews".

But I am really struck by the rapidity and scale of the government's retreat from its much more extensive and destructive list of demands that it tried to impose on schools at the start of this mess. It would be far better if Cornell and other schools simply said "no." But still, a notable shift.

There are bad things here, including the transparently bad-faith mess about reporting students races + SAT/ACT scores to the government so they can falsely accuse Cornell in the future of illegal race-based affirmative action (a move that imperils perfectly legal class-based affirmative action).

Maaaaaany graduate students at CSHL have stories. I'll send them your way. I tweeted once about him and was immediately called out by our PR. They sat me down and told me they knew he was problematic but that he brought in too much donor money for us to say anything bad about him.
