Hey I'm not actually done talking about Dolly Parton. 🧵 Specifically I want to talk about her album 9 to 5 and Odd Jobs, released in 1980 (not the soundtrack to the film 9 to 5, that's a different thing). The whole album is about work, with most of the songs focused on a different type of worker.

excellent essay about an excellent film "What I like about Camp Miasma, what I respect about it, is that it's less interested in telling us what queerness has to look like than it is in pushing queer people to work out desire and intimacy on their own terms."

Four! Thousand! Words! About! CAMP MIASMA!!! And none of them are paywalled, which I will regret: jude-doyle.ghost.io/notes-teenag...

great read! "We can get used to anything, but that doesn’t mean we should. I see hope in this generation’s growing disgust with the narrowing of public life—the lull of their devices and the pervasiveness of the eyes all around them."

TODAY: @felipedlh.bsky.social on what NYU was and has become. “For these undergraduates, the idea that not so long ago the university allowed people (anyone?!) to move freely about its private spaces seems ludicrous, impossible.” flaminghydra.com/r/ca8224b3?m...

somewhat motivated by everyone’s response to Dolly and Tim Curry passing to remark: if you were moved by them be what moves you. Be kind, generous, make weird fucking art, help people, sing bawdy songs and do drag

Dolly Parton, among a thousand other amazing things she did in her life, gifted over 330 million books to kids through her Imagination Library program. Her passing is a tremendous loss to the world, but you can support the program today to keep it going imaginationlibrary.com

🚨BREAKING: Our union of over 12,000 baristas are officially calling for a Starbucks boycott. Read this statement penned by Starbucks workers on why a boycott from ALL customers, allies, and organizations is necessary to fight back against corporate greed:

BOYCOTT STARBUCKS is written inside a zig-zaggy speech bubble against crumbled paper. Beside it are the Starbucks Workers United logo and an image of a coffee cup being poured out.We, the 12,000 and growing members of Starbucks Workers United, call on everyone who stands with working people to boycott Starbucks until they finalize a contract with union baristas and stop union-busting.
What we’re fighting for is simple: a minimum $17/hr wage, enough hours to live on, better staffing in our stores, and basic workplace protections. Every year, our living costs rise but our wages don’t keep up – a growing pressure many American workers are feeling as corporate greed accelerates unchecked in our country.
Starbucks is banking on customers' blind loyalty to the integrity and values this company once stood for in order to keep squeezing them for profits. At a time when working-class people across the country are struggling in a challenging economy, it is no longer possible to be both a Starbucks customer and in support of workers; choosing to spend money at Starbucks is choosing a law breaking corporation over the baristas who make your coffee everyday exactly as you ask for it.
Starbucks has violated U.S. labor law more than any other company in modern history–the NLRB and its judges have found that Starbucks committed hundreds of labor violations and there are currently more than 550 unresolved unfair labor practice charges still pending against the company. Instead of finalizing a fair and reasonable union contract, Starbucks has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of care for the workers who fuel the company’s profits by wasting millions of dollars on AI and technology that doesn’t work, launching countless gimmicky drinks designed to distract from real problems, and inventing pointless policies that do nothing but make our jobs harder.
This ongoing, irrational behavior by Starbucks and its refusal to settle a fair union contract with workers leaves us with no other choice than to call for a boycott. We know when working people stand up together, we win.
No Contract? No Coffee.

Listen, if you’re not happy single, you won’t be happy in a relationship either, happiness comes from picking a new hobby and then buying all the things to start that hobby then finding the perfect little storage container for those things and then putting that storage container in the spare room

It's true that those takes are really bad but the good news is you are at the very least making sure people who are avoiding them see them anyway and get mad about them. Here's why that's praxis: 🧵(1/????)

What a fantastic essay, ending with the unsettling “huh” realization that Marvel’s post-infinity war sequence are some of the only media dealing even obliquely with the grief and disruption or COVID

Just want to remind everyone that the Mayor cut 200 critical jobs which will result in significant service cuts at a time when Portlanders need govt the most, meanwhile he kept 70 vacancies in the police bureau even though per PPB's own staffing report they will NOT fill most of those positions. 🙃

It’s Disability Pride Month. Fascists are enacting a blatant eugenicist project worldwide. You can disrupt it. You can defy fascists, do community care, keep resistance efforts healthy, & shield marginalized groups from disproportionate harm. How? Wear an n95 in public. Give/get mutual aid:

If the Supreme Court can reverse a 95 year-old ruling for a country that is only 250 years old, I need you to UNDERSTAND this country still has no idea what it is or what it stands for other than it’s constant push-and-pull to oppress Black people and eliminate Native people.

Sometimes people ask why DSA councilors in Portland can’t do what Mamdani is doing and part of that is that he has executive power as the Mayor. You need a progressive Mayor with a progressive legislative body (the city council) to make big change. Let’s use the rent freeze as an example ⬇️

Mycelial organizing is not very visible most of the time. It's not hierarchical, it is leaderful rather than centralized under a single leader. There's no central tree trunk to target, no branches to follow to trace the organization. You can't watch the fruit develop and predict its ripeness.

Almost a decade ago, I was very Special Interested in mushrooms and developed an organizing training framework based on mycelium. The core teaching was, people think the above-ground part (the mushroom) is the body of the organism, but that isn't the case. So too with movement. (cont)
