A ballot initiative that sought to direct 25 percent of Portland’s Clean Energy Fund toward hiring additional police officers failed to gather enough valid signatures to qualify for the November ballot.

Because the loudest voices in the city want you to forget this, I just want to say Portland is great. There are so many people who love this city so much and show up every day to make it more welcoming and more just. It’s a beautiful place full of people who give a shit.

Statement from mayor reads: “We are operating on an aggressive timeline to reach a new lease, and we have been explicit with the Blazers that design information and clarity around public investment are necessary to move forward.
