I’m sorry but this isn’t a feel good story. It’s dystopian. Babies with disabilities should not be bearing the burden of raising money so other babies with disabilities can have access to something as basic as hearing. We need universal healthcare. It’s half the cost and full coverage. 1/2

I was talking with a colleague the other day who said that while he’s not sure if AI will change physics research so much as to unemploy the physicists, he’s confident that teaching will always need humans.
Benjamin Riley@benjaminjriley.bsky.social · 3w agoSo we know AI helped a negligible number of students. But how many did it harm? I've crunched the raw data provided by the lead researcher, and what I've found is that ~9,500 students using AI studied less than even the *least* studious, non-AI using student. This should shock the conscience.
Both the Economist and others suggest this study demonstrates that AI can help students. So I contacted the lead researcher to figure out how many. Answer: Out of ~26,000 kids, a total of 20. And five months after starting to use AI, only four continued to spend 65 minutes on homework. Four.
Benjamin Riley@benjaminjriley.bsky.social · 3w agoI mean, c'mon. What this data shows is (a) there's a huge number of students using AI and not studying for very long compared to peers; and (b) negligible "benefits" for students who did study for comparable time periods and used AI.

FWIW, Meta was fully aware of how these glasses would primarily be used. The glasses were designed to erase consent, and that is why they exist. Anything that they do that suggests they want to ameliorate this use is an attempt to win the PR battle and manipulate public opinion.
