Man it would be really dumb if the anti-AI people end up preventing us from limiting AI because they remain convinced it is just "marketing" and isn't actually a threat.

I'm really struggling with living through what could end up being the most profound historical moment in all of human history and that it's just Wednesday and I have to do Wednesday things. This is First Contact with an emerging alien mind, and, I have to, make lunch? check the mail? Unbelievable.
For years, New Yorkers have demanded access to City records about the lasting health impacts of the horrific September 11th attacks. For years, they have been denied and ignored. That ends today. nyc.gov/sept11docs

I think you can argue about what the right narrative is about the rogue ai, but the math stuff is formally verified in proof solvers. It's real. I don't disagree that there's zany corporate hype and stupid shit, but real stuff is happening, and it's accelerating.
Holy fuck finally got my CT scan analyzed and Claude nailed the diagnosis after being misdiagnosed by several doctors for 3 years. I might finally be able to get some actual medical help!
So, from my perspective, it'd be like if two companies were getting toward developing nuclear technology before anyone else had. And instead of saying "oh my god this is a big deal" people are saying it's corporate PR, and why are you even talking about it.
All the plastic humanity has ever produced is ~10 billion tonnes. Humans emitted ~10 billion tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere in the first three months of 2026. When we appreciate orders of magnitude, we see how intractable the CO₂ problem becomes once we dump it into the atmosphere.
I wonder if we made all single use plastic out of algae-derived petroleum, it would constitute CDR. You pull CO2 from the atmosphere, concentrate it to rapidly produce the algae and thereby capturing it, extract the oil, produce plastic, use it once, then toss it in a landfill...
We are certainly going to witness Millennium Prize-winning-level non-human intelligence at 15,000 tok/s in the next 5-10 years, if not much, much sooner. The world is truly not ready. I never would have dreamed I'd be alive for such a historic time period. AGI-specific meme edit courtesy of 2022.

Has using AI at work made me worse at other things in my life?

At the end of the day, this visualization shows what's driving the rising risk of these dangerous heat waves. It's the human-caused burning of fossil fuels and the resulting increase in greenhouse gases. That's it. More climate change indicators: zacklabe.com/climate-chan...

It’s totally OK and indeed reasonable to be mistrustful of AI products and (especially) AI vendors, but turning your brain off the instant you see “and Claude” is the exact opposite of critically engaging with industry practices. It’s “go woke, go broke” for nerds.
I had dinner w/pharma people a while ago and asked if they are discussing internally, the collapse of science. The response was “yeah, all the time. But we figure that the pipeline is about a decade long and we’ll have made our money and be retired by the time it completely collapses”. Me: ……………..
This is right on target. If you know anyone in biotech and pharma, please speak with them www.biocentury.com/article/659615
hey, remember all the people who cited METR as a sign that AI was unreliable and offered no time savings for the median dev a year ago? well, guess what METR is saying now? now is a great opportunity to revise priors rather than cherry-picking science. either METR is reliable or it isn't. Pick.
METR has given up. God help us all.
friend, this is Marcus Junius Brutus CAESAR has declared himself DICTATOR FOR LIFE and MUST BE STOPPED can you rush a donation of ten denarii today to show that you STAND WITH THE REPUBLIC?
So, in launching a huge bombing campaign on Iran they apparently didn't plan for: - Who takes over; - Interceptor shortages from sustained drone retaliation; - How to defend US bases in the region; - Threats to ships in the Strait of Hormuz; and - How to evacuate Americans with airspace closed.
seeing this shit while donald trump is president is enough to melt my brain
Deplorable state of U.S. media on display here, deliberately misleading the public. You can literally type into Google the same question @aoc.bsky.social was asked and the AI will give you her same answer because "strategic ambiguity" has been official U.S. policy her whole life.
Elimination of emissions standards was one of the pretty clear policy stakes of the 2024 election and it received about 1% as much coverage as whether Tim Walz retiring from the national guard after 21 years was cowardly.
“The U.S. no longer has emission standards of any meaning,” said Margo T. Oge, who served as the E.P.A.’s top vehicle emissions regulator under three presidents and has since advised both automakers and environmental groups… “Nothing. Zero,” she added. “Not many countries have zero.”
It's annoying that we already had so many existing problems to solve before these assholes created a bunch of new ones for no reason
