Friend was thinking about replacing her 10+ yr old Accord with a new Toyota hybrid. I told her about Toyota donating $1 mill to the current president's inauguration & spending 60% of their political donations on GOP candidates & now Toyota's off her list.

From Superstitions of the Highlands & Islands of Scotland, Collected Entirely from Oral Sources, by John Gregorson Campbell (1900)

The Harvest Old Wife (a Chailleach).—In harvest, there was a struggle to escape being the last done with the shearing, and when tillage in common existed, instances were known of a ridge being left unshorn (no person would claim it) because of it being behind the rest. The fear entertained was that of having the ‘famine of the farm’ (gort a bhaile), in the shape of an imaginary old woman (cailleach), to feed till next harvest. Much emulation and amusement arose from the fear of this old woman; and from it arose the expression, “Better is a mercy-leap in harvest than a sheaf additional” (’As fearr leum-iochd a’s t’ fhogaradh na sguab a bharrachd). The cum-iochd, or mercy-leap, is where a rocky mound or a soft spot, where no corn grows, occurs in a ridge. Its occurrence was a great help to the shearing being done.

The first done made a doll of some blades of corn, which was called the ‘old wife,’ and sent it to his nearest neighbour. He in turn, when ready, passed it to another still less expeditious, and the person it last remained with had the ‘old woman’ to keep for that year. The old wife was known in Skye as the Cripple Goat (a Ghobhar Bhacach).

The fear of the Cailleach in harvest made a man in Saor-bheinn, in the Ross of Mull, who farmed his land in common with another, rise and shear his corn by moonlight. In the morning he found it was his neighbour’s corn he had cut.

I think AI is a good analogy for driving & the problems with car culture. There's the normalisation of the behaviour, seeing it as generally harmless or not so bad in moderation or framing individual acts as insignificant, & there's pressure so that you're not "left behind" or "getting in the way."

We got robbed like 8 years ago and they took our PS4 among everything. Sony said the PS4 had come back online and they could give law enforcement the connection details to coordinate the location with the ISP. The detective "investigating" never even returned my calls to get the number to call Sony

It’s so funny when people are like “sure you’re an abolitionist now but wait until you’re the victim of a property crime.” Buddy, the most useful thing the police have ever done for property crime is put the form you need to submit to your insurance online.

i got mugged at shotgun point. the cops arrested the wrong guy, hustled me out of court at the hearing when i said ”that’s not the guy,” told me “you didn’t see him,” made me do a lineup at the prison and when i said “that’s the guy i saw in court, still not him” told me “it’s OK, he’s a bad person”

Yikes, the amount of tanker aircraft assisting with the fire in Spokane is incredible - visible are 5 Canadair Scoopers and Super Scoopers, a Boeing 737, a Dehavilland tanker, at least three Sikorsky helicopters. There has also been a DC-10 tanker and now a DC-9 tanker. Just amazing coordination.

When someone tried to break down our door 16 years ago, the cops came, took our statements, and vanished. Our private investigation business regularly gets people looking for help with property crimes because the local police have done *absolutely nothing* of use to them.

When I visit my friend every summer, I try not to clutter up her pantry too much with my food, but I finally couldn't handle another summer with only Uncle Ben's for rice & bought a bag of Calrose at H-Mart today.

In the intro communication theory classes I've taught, this is one of our central topics. The practice of note-taking is a form of thinking, much like writing is in general. A lot of figuring out happens as you take notes, especially with practice and especially longhand. 1/2

Anyway, your problem isn‘t finding the time to take notes. The problem is that taking notes is thinking and thinking has to be done by someone. women have been doing a lot of metacognition that looks like a task when it’s really thinking.
