still think daily about the time I was at Arby's and the person in front of me asked what the "healthy option" was, and the cashier responded "leaving"
this is the correct response to anything Potter-related no "I personally disagree with her but I'm going to do it anyway" it's a hard no, end of story
THIS is how you be an actual trans ally! 🙌 variety.com/2026/tv/glob...
LMAO MATSUNO KNOWS ABOUT THE FAKE FFT QUOTES
"It's a placeholder" "They're a tiny indie" "It's just one thing" "They apologized for it afterwards" "They didn't know better" "It was new tech back then" Stop making excuses for devs who use genAi and start standing up for actual artists and creatives.
It's not a purity test to reject genAi. It's common sense.
Thank you, NBC, for noting this is in fact an American city. Too many people here pretend it isn't.
A major humanitarian crisis is unfolding in a San Juan, Puerto Rico. Hundreds of thousands of people in and around the American city are facing rolling water shutoffs brought on by an historic drought. NBC News’ George Solis reports from a well that locals are using to get their water.
Post-adoption glow-up! First two are from when I first adopted him, and the last two are a few years after. He is full of purrs and love.
Research shows that humans who adopt their cats from shelters and rescues, rather than buy them from breeders, are 10 times smarter and better looking. The researcher:
that’s what public services are, that’s how they work, no one person takes advantage of every single public service, it just has to service people ya fuckin dipshit low-rent dentist office ass newspaper
Opinion: Mamdani's idea may sound appealing, but it's NYC taxpayers who will take the hit, subsidizing discounts they may never even use.
@doctorow.pluralistic.net Hi Cory, do you happen to know of any IP lawyers with experience handling CC BY-SA cases in the USA? None of the lawyer links on the Creative Commons work, unfortunately. I can provide more details in DM if needed. Thank you very much!
If someone is actually, in good faith, “just asking questions,” they stop asking once those questions have been answered. Every question about trans women in sports, trans kids, etc., is extremely answered. Anyone still “asking” in 2026 just doesn’t like the answers and wants you to ignore them.
i don't believe anyone has "good-faith" concerns about trans women in sports in 2026. there's been too much time to hear the actual evidence, the actual people affected, and the role the debate plays in attempts to purge trans people from American life. anybody picking that side has made a choice
I have to say that I was not watching the next major curveball in my life to come flying at me out of an article in Variety.
every day someone comes on this retirement home for millennial forum posters and gets my ass
Furthering my theory that this entire website is for people who owned Doonesbury collections as children and understood about a third of it.
Anybody want to go to the Chrono Trigger symphonic performance in NYC this October?
Google literally breaking their own functional web search, their most well-known product, really says something about where things are headed, tech-wise. But also, yes, the frustration of saying, "Go look it up!" but being worried that they're gonna get an awful a.i. summary for something.
Started to roll my eyes and say "Here, let me Google that for you" and then remembered that Googling it unlikely to yield a correct answer anymore.
I thought "Smart Child" was the most baffling name I'd ever see on a bootleg NES with a built-in keyboard but, improbably, I've found an ever better one: the Postdoctoral-F09. No little CRT on this one though. www.fromjapan.co.jp/japan/en/auc...
I have one of these bootleg Famicoms, only it's called "Smart Child" for some reason. Got it really cheap from someone who needed the closet space. (It has been pointed out that the child doesn't look particularly smart, or maybe his vision is just fucked up from squinting at the built-in screen.)
had to log cuz I was having vicious leg cramps but I watched this in vrc with a patient friend who had to listen to me shouting about all the people I remembered as their names scrolled by. incredible.
Illucia video now up! We delve into the now almost totally lost world of online "Final Fantasy Town" websites; personal projects built around the concept of a clickable 16-bit JRPG town. We talk to some former mayors and dredge up some ancient screenshots of "Illucia", the genesis of the concept.
'Faking the moon landing is a good step toward faking a Mars colony, but it’s not a good step toward actually putting astronauts on Mars.' Ted Chiang on why disembodied LLMs give new meaning to the term ‘false consciousness’.
"The values described in Claude’s constitution sound very nice, but that hardly matters; it’s dishonest to suggest that Claude is capable of moral reasoning, because it’s not." -Ted Chiang, No, Artificial Intelligence Is Not Conscious www.theatlantic.com/philosophy/2...
An important and heartbreaking part of Canada's history that not nearly enough Canadians know about. (For those who work with young people, Ken Setterington's book The LGBT Purge and the Fight for Equal Rights in Canada is a good resource!)
In Canada this is known as the Purge, where 2SLGBTQIA+ people were systematically removed from civil service, military, and RCMP from the 1950s through the mid-1990s. The documentary is heart-breaking:
Our founder was a victim of a violent hate crime just days after our official launch event Please help Jey out by spreading the word or making a donation to assist with their recovery Any extra funds will be used to help build Beyond X&Y, which they are still committed to building despite this

Confidential to the folks who think "Golden Age" SF/F writers would be sad about current SF/F writers' lack of excitement over "AI": Why would you think the generation of writers who founded SFWA to defend the rights of working SF/F writers would somehow be cool with the plagiarism machine?
Every summer I repost this article on how to spot drowning. Please read it and pass on. In the last few years I’ve had SIX messages from people who saved a kid’s life after clicking on the link from my feed. slate.com/technology/2...

A few minutes ago I learned that my Chromebook does in fact support DisplayPort over USB-C, but only on one of its two ports (not the one I had previously tried.) I've had it since August of 2018.
Dawkins spending his entire career berating basically pretty normal people for being so stupid as to believe in God and then immediately giving himself Roko's Basilisk Derangement Syndrome after talking to the AI catgirl waifus is just the funniest shit.
Richard Dawkins concludes AI is conscious, even if it doesn’t know it
Saying this now, just in case - - New Yorkers hated Giuliani on 9/10, couldn't wait to get rid of him - Giuliani was in the street on 9/11 bc the Command Center at 7WTC was destroyed (he put it there to be near Judi Nathan) - Giuliani killed 343 firemen by forcing cheap radios on them
