The last Magdalene laundry closed in my lifetime. Homosexuality was decriminalised in Ireland in my lifetime. Access to condoms without a prescription in Ireland only came in 1985. We repealed the 8th. There's a lot of ways in which Ireland is still bad, but it is an entirely different country.

David Henig@davidheniguk.bsky.social · 2d agoMy initial view of German trains is they aren't just bad, but utterly catastrophic, sweeping cancellations far in excess of any reasonable system, and everyone just shrugging that this is normal. As a symbol of a fading economic giant it is perfect.

The downfall was TV Tropes (and YouTubers lifting from it). It's a fascinating website yet, it's encouraged millions to scream at the telly, when they spot a recognisable thing, "TROPE!" You don't want stories without tropes, like you don't want music without a key, except as arty experiments.

Apropo of absolutely nothing, one of the reasons New Atheism is now despised and mocked is that when allegations came out about its figureheads (all men), the self-appointed leaders (generally all men) decided the best way to deal with that was silencing, sophistry, mocking, and legal threats.

I agree strongly with this -- in that difficult moment, the possibility of collective effort was conceivable. Not everybody felt it, but many did. I think the political class did not like this one bit.

That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.
Could the state's assault on the financial viability of legal aid solicitors be linked to this global trend? Sunday papers full of coordinated PR pieces attacking these specialists.
