They start school in LAUSD in August and my kids class had to spend 2 hours in the library every day last week because they couldn't afford to fix the air conditioning at school. Every grade had to take turns getting a cool down period in the library. @governor.ca.gov you are a pile of shit.

Judge Clark has moved fast in response to this wacky motion to enjoin the Missouri Supreme Court. He has ordered intervenor-defendants (the org that supported the referendum and its exec director) to respond to the motion by 5 CT today.

You WANT a system where nobody is punished for paying taxes. That's why Congress protected tax return information. Then came Trump's mass deportation campaign, and ICE demanded 1.28 million addresses taken from tax returns. After firing enough lawyers at IRS, they said yes.

Until 2025, the IRS had interpreted section 6103(i)(2) “to prohibit disclosure of a taxpayer’s address when no other information is requested.” Centro de Trabajadores Unidos, 167 F.4th at 1226. That spring, however, “news reports emerged that [the Department of Homeland Security] had asked IRS to disclose addresses of some undocumented taxpayers.” Id. It came to light that the Department of Homeland Security had entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the IRS “to establish the procedures and requirements for” ICE to submit putatively “valid I[nternal] R[evenue] C[ode] § 6103(i)(2) requests for addresses of persons subject to criminal investigation under 8 U.S.C. § 1253(a)(1)”—a statute that, among other things, criminalizes willfully remaining in the United States beyond a 90-day grace period after a final order of removal has been issued. DHS-ICE MOU 2 (App. 359). With the MOU in place, ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons sent a written request to the IRS seeking “the last known address” for 1.28 million undocumented individuals. Lyons Letter 1-2 (June 27, 2025) (App. 326-27); Romo Decl. ¶ 4, Ctr. for Taxpayer Rts., 815 F. Supp. 3d 1 (D.D.C. 2025) (No. 25- 0457), Dkt. No. 66-1. Director Lyons’s letter announced that ICE sought that information from the IRS because it “may contain address information which is potentially at issue with respect to investigating . . . a violation under 8 U.S.C. § 1253(a)(1).” Lyons Letter 1 (App. 326). On July 1, the IRS gave its employees the “green light” to begin processing ICE’s 1.28 million requests. “Letter from ICE” Emails 1-2 (App. 440-41).

I don’t remember whose insight this is, but it blew my mind when I first read that to understand American history you have to get that race law was designed to increase the number of enslavable people (one-drop rule) and decrease the number of claimants to indigenous land (blood quantum)

Maha is just another astroturfed front in the American Reactionary Movement. This movement is responsible for every public health crisis: climate, automobile deaths, gun violence, homelessness, poverty. Its the Don't Tell Me What To Do movement. They are few but they're mobilized for war.

There's no evidence that we can neutralize MAHA with a better health care system. Western Europe has universal access and lower costs — and still has huge anti-vaxx and “medical freedom” movements. MAHA is driven by right-wing misinformation, not legitimate grievances with US healthcare.

Unless I missed it, there are quotes in here from Pritzker, but they ring a bit hollow, especially the first one about people not normally being protestors, when local IL cops (inc. his state troopers) were beating and arresting protestors in Broadview, IL.

"Most people are not protesters. They don't normally want to go out and stand up to authority," he said in an interview with the Tribune. "... And I think all of that's changed. People are ready. People are more ready. They've seen themselves to be like, 'Oh, we are the force that can push back peacefully on these ICE agents."For Pritzker, one of the most difficult lessons exposed the limitations of his office. "I'm frustrated that there have not been attempts at prosecution. And you know, as governor, I don't have a prosecutorial capability. The state's attorneys are on the front lines of doing that," he said. "Now they get to choose what laws they enforce. And to me, though, these were obvious. These were violent crimes that were being committed." While federal agents swept through Chicago last fall, leaving behind a trail of trauma, Pritzker said he took advantage of his bully pulpit to galvanize the public. But he knew the state could only offer intangible protection.Now Pritzker thinks more about accountability: Who will hold agents responsible for breaching protocol and policy if no one will at the federal level? He created the Illinois Accountability Commission to collect evidence of agents' actions that might have broken laws.

The distracted driving discourse is already popping off but I’d just like to throw in: I’ve been an insurance adjuster for almost 13 years. When I started, we almost never saw high speed rear end impacts. Now they’re like the most common type of claim. It’s distractions, this is obvious.
